What is it with people wearing pajamas out in public?

I'm so sick of seeing people shopping in their jammies. If you're gonna go out in public, at least have the decency to put some clothes on first.

It is quite disheartening the way American society has allowed itself to get so sloppy under the guise of "expressing myself". Which of course is a poorly coded word for "lazy". And the even sadder part is that YOU get the funny looks if you're the only one in the room dressed respectfully these days.

My two teenage daughters do this as well much to my ire.

Around here the rumour is that this trend started with kids on University campuses (specifically Charlton in Ontario which has tunnels connecting most buildings) running to class in the morning without changing.

Could also be cause track suits like this one look very PJ like?

10 years ago, a co-worker of mine said if you see someone out in sweat pants after 12 PM, they've given up on life. I think that applies to pajamas now.

Some people use the "lounge pants" excuse. "Oh, they're not jammies, they're lounge pants." Ok, I admit I have done this myself (after midnight at the grocery store), when I needed something for school in my early teaching days. Maybe all of twice. And sometimes we do have pajama day at my school, but I will bring them with me, not wear them walking down the street.

It's actually considered fashion now as opposed to convenience. Around here, it's PJ bottoms and Ugg styled boots. I've got an entire aisle in my store of those Ugg knockoffs and a great many of them are wearing lounge pants to tuck into them. At my previous location, a decidedly urban store, it was huge. I asked someone about this and they said it's part of urban culture to wear pj's and high boots now. It's a mildly annoying trend, but whatever sells my shoes is a good thing.

We used to wear sweat pants to college classes. So, I guess this is the updated version of that.

Usually I see university girls doing this, but I've seen homeless mentally unstable people do it as well. I've probably seen both types at Wallmart over the years.

Fashion-wise I kind of remember first seeing this in the late 90s, when using Starbucks as a study hall became an in-thing for university girls. It could have started later though.

They posted a fake story in a local paper that they were going to ban pajama pants in public, last summer, and people went nuts. They actually started organizing a march to protest the ruling which was never more than a rumor, in the first place. I can be a lazy sack some times and I could never wear them in public. If they can wear what they sleep in, I should be able to wear my lime green thong and fuzzy slipper socks that I sleep in. They're violating my damn right of expression.

What's worst is when they wear the too long pajama pants with the filthy frayed bottoms dragging under their flip flops (too lazy to tie shoes as well I guess). And the Jammie's are quite often either Spongebob or last Christmas.
