Yea our lifelong Kmart closed about 2 years ago. I know its just a store but it made me and a lot of people sad because it was there our whole lives. I remember getting star wars toys, Gi joes and a ton of other cool toys there as well as awesome stuff around halloween. We got pic of me and my brother there from the photo center back in the 70's. The store had been in decline when wal fart came to town and the rise of the local malls (which recently closed as well but that's another story). I would go in there from time to time for nostalgic purposes even 4 years ago going down the same aisles I bought all those treasures from back in the 70's and 80's. It also had the old school cafeteria in the back and it really did feel like the 70's and early 80's in there. Nothing lasts forever and that lifelong store I knew would eventually go but I was sad when it did..

We still have our local K-Mart, and a Wal-Mart Supercenter across the town. K-Mart opened in 1980 and it's much closer than Wal-Mart and I always prefer going to K-Mart than Wal-Mart. KM's prices might be higher, but I'll trade running in and out in 10 minutes and not having to wade through the trashy pajama pants, Crocs wearing rabble at WM. And that's the check out people!

Weird thing, our Sears just closed a couple of months ago, shame too it was a pretty nice one.

I much rather deal with KMart. Here in East Tennessee Wal Mart is crazy packed pretty much any time of the day or night. They are always understaffed and have only 2 lanes open so you can pretty much be ensured to be stuck behind the 'extreme couponer' with 80 toothbrushes, 20 cases of Campbells soup etc and a binder full of coupons arguing with the 80 year old cashier!

Our Kmart has the same or in many cases BETTER prices than Walmart. I know their pharmacy is more competitive and just nicer people there.

Since sears bought them they have Kenmore, Craftsman, DieHard etc, and a customer appreciation card....What does Walmart have? Cheap Junk. Some would argue that you save 3 cents a gallon of gas with a gift card at Walmart, but Kmart has a better program that can save you over 10 cents a gallon if you build up points!

The article that the OP linked to was very biased, and honestly I could show you a bunch of Walmart area stores that are equally dirty, poorly stocked etc........and dont even get me started with the 'people of wal mart'!

Dont misunderstand me, I realize that Kmart is circling the bowl, but I believe the reason is that Walmart has done a lot better job of manipulating people into thinking that they are a better store.....truth is, they are smoke and mirrors, cheap junk sold at cheap prices, to ill informed consumers. But it also reflects that Walmart did a better job at understanding which way the 'intelligence' of the average American consumer went.

Wow folks talk about irony here. About 15 min after typing my little story about our local kmart closing I just got a message via facebook that our local hobby shop that's been there for 43 years is closing. The owner wants to retire and believe it or not the store did well in this day and age. But its another change that will be hard to get used to. Now Im bummed..

K-Mart and Sears are both dead man walking chains.

I had it with Sears, the worst customer service out of all the big chains, good riddance to them.

I hate Walmart as well, the one in Oakland is pure ghetto, the customers are worse than the employees.

Target is the big store we shop as a family, but we avoid the Oakland/Emeryville Target because the parking lot is badly designed, and the traffic jams in there during the weekend is horrendous, so we go to the two story Target in Albany, a town next to Berkeley (which is next to Oakland)...the parking lot is much better.

Our local Kmart looks like a war zone. Outdated fixtures, empty shelves and crater bowling ball sized holes throughout the floor. It's disgusting that they let it get to that.

Ours is turning into the auxiliary LEGOLAND parking lot. Its free and all you have to do is walk across a 4 lane highway.

The K-mart in my area is a little better, because is it's odd area. One Target a bit farther away in a shopping center where parking is crap and no Wal-Marts anyplace close.

K-Mart came in and the old Grants dept store went out back in the day, now Target may spell the end for K-Mart in our town. Ours is actually very well kept too!

I noticed where K-Marts are going to open at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving day to beat other stores to the Black Friday punch. Feel sorry for their employees.

Also a kind of cool thing that K-Mart has been doing for collectors is they have Hot Wheel and Mattel Disney Cars collector days. Usually on a Sunday and my two boys like to go in for those.

They should do more stuff like that!

The K-Mart I bought so many of my childhood toys at closed down over a decade ago. It is now a Rural King - which is a farm/ hunting equipment discount store. I still go there from time to time for grass seed, etc. and I swear it still smells like my 70's K-Mart in there. It's like smell nostalgia!!!!

My mom and I went there for some stuff today. We asked one of the sales people if there were drop cloths available and she said no.

Guess what we found in the paint section? Yup, plastic drop cloths for painting and plastering. Goes to show that some of these sales people don't know what they are talking about.

Just imagine all of the overtime their employees will rack up.
