Not to run this thread further off the rails, but regarding the slam on the bay area, I couldn't disagree more. My wife and I had the pleasure of spending 3 days in San Francisco last month (we were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary) and we absolutely loved the area.
We did all the obligatory touristy things - biked over the Golden Gate Bridge, spent an afternoon in Sausalito, toured the city on an open-top Double-decker bus, rode a cable car, etc - and enjoyed every minute of it. We walked for miles around the city (dang, those hills are something else!), saw Lombard street, Chinatown, etc. And if we'd been visiting a week later, I would have gone to see my beloved (albeit down-trodden) Oakland Raiders beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The only negative was the traffic, but that was worse than usual due to the BART strike. We didn't get to visit Alcatraz, as it was sold out, but otherwise we had a great time. Next time, I'm looking you up Hector!

Hec Im from the Baltimore/d.c. area . Im not saying it's better or worse Im just stating why I despise the bay area. I stayed in Redwood city, Daly City (stuck up asians annoy me) and worked in San Fransisco for 8 months so I wasn't just a tourist but I did all the tourist stuff when I was there as well and could care less about it. Im tried to be open minded but I hated it there. And I did work in Oakland which to me wishes it could be a tough east coast city. I know everyone loves that bay but I hated every second of being there and could not wait to get back to the east coast and be near my chesapeake bay (which Im staring at as I type this) your seafood sucks out there by the way! As far as diversity we have plenty of it out here. I like the old dark colonial vibe maryland has. I was born here and plan to die here and yes we have a culture in itself here which you never here about and yes there tons of tourist stuff to do here. I also couldn't stand the whole hippe loving haight street liberal pothead vibe either. As far as wheather goes I like how we get all 4 seasons out here. I like the fact that people from all over the country don't want to move here (although alot of new yorker's are moving here cause NYC is so damn expensive nowdays) You could pay me a million bucks to move out to SF and I wouldn't do it that's how much I hate it!(and Ive had good job offers to out there). The countryside out here in maryland is beautiful and has the vibe that I like. As far as sports teams I have no problem with the Raiders what so ever and we had a big group come out to our group to route against the 49ers in the superbowl. Well that's my reasons why I despise your beloved bay area and your inhabitants in it. Have you even been out east before? But hey life is to short do your thing and If I offended anyone GOOD!

I've been lucky enough to have been all over this country and a few places around the world. Every single place I've been I've always found things that I liked and disliked but I've never been anywhere that I despised or hated. No place is perfect, some better than others but I've learned that any place you go a lot of it is what you make of it. I'm a pretty open minded and friendly dude and am accepting of most people. Being from the south, early in my life I always heard how unfriendly and rude that "yankees" are. Once I ventured north I found out is was all bs and met some of the nicest and helpful people ever. I have come across rude and unfriendly people most everywhere but I figure that's their personal problem and not the place in general.
