Your LOCAL Amusement Parks in the 70's?

We had a couple here in North Jersey ......

This one went out of business back in the early 80's but it was always a fav of mine.
    It was called Bertrand's Island.....
Bertrand Island Amusement Park, Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey

Allentown PA's Dorney Park was always a good one too...
Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom - PA Amusement Park & Waterpark, over 100 rides and attractions

Lastly, sometimes we would go to Palisades Park

Great Adventure (Six Flags) in Jackson, NJ.

I remember going through the Safari in the car and getting stuck behind an idiot who demanded to be let through with a Vinyl topped car. Despite the warning from the park, he signed a release waiver for liability damage to his car. This annoyed us because we had to wait a while at the gate while this jerk played out this drama with the park employees. We asked the attendant what the problem was and he explained that we would be in for quite a fun show when we got to the Baboon area. No more than 30 seconds into that section, they were on top of his car shredding every last piece of vinyl from his roof. The guys wife and kids were screaming for their lives as these large snarling simians went to town on his Monte Carlo (or whatever Landau topped car it was). You could hear their shrieks through the closed windows of their car and ours. This "great adventure" lasted about 5 to 10 minutes because the guy couldn't even see through his windshield to drive away.. There must have been 15 to 20 Baboons jumping on his entire car looking for a piece of the action. Besides his roof, I think his hood, roof and trunk may have been dented in from the weight.

It was worth the wait. We had one or two jump on our car, check us out and move on, but the show in front of us was surreal.

The rest of the park was fun, Lightning Loops and Rolling Thunder were the big coasters of the day back then.

We had Opryland hat was in Nashville. They closed the park in the mid 90's and built a mall.

They are now talking about rebuilding the park across the street from the mall. I hope the do it. That was a fun amusement park

Kings Island, which is close to Cincinnati, OH. I several fond memories of this place and still enjoy taking my son there. It's changed a lot over the years and I was really sorry to see the Happy Land of Hanna Barbera get converted into a Nickelodeon theme but I understand that the park has to change with the times.

In New York (where I grew up):

Coney Island, Palisades, Rockaway Park, Great Adventure, Kingsburg (I think that's what it was called).

Up here in Central NY we had:

-The Enchanted Forest (now Enchanted Forest/Water Safari)
-Storytown USA (became the Great Escape, then Six Flags Great Escape)
-Gaslight Village (defunct)...this was also paired with Cavalcade of Cars (stuff like the Munsters Coach and the V-8 Mobile) along with a decent Wax Museum (still remember the Raquel Welch figure from "1 Million BC")
                          - Frontiertown (defunct)
                          - Land of Make Believe (defunct)
                          - Santa's Workshop (still there I believe)
                          - Darien Lake (became Six Flags Darien Lake but has since reverted back to just Darien Lake, no longer a Six Flags franchise)

Living in San Diego, CA as a kid, I vividly remember going to Sea World (the best! You could eat a hot dog over the killer whales) and Disneyland.

Seems like I also remember going to Kings Dominion in Virginia a couple of times too when we lived there.

Kings Dominion was basically the park we went to as a kid. Richmond is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Maryland. Busch Gardens in Williamsburg was also good but Kings Dominion was generally preferred from a kid perspective.

Hersheyland isn't too far away either. I can remember taking a trip up to Lancaster one year when I was a kid and begging my parents to take us to Dutch Wonderland but they said we weren't up there to visit an amusement park. A few years ago, we took our kids up and spent a day there. It's a nice little amusement park that doesn't seem like it gets too crowded. There aren't any big thrill rides or anything but it's really good if you have younger kids.
