    Ebay fees went up again!

Ebay raised their Final Value Fees to 10%.
Come on! I'm trying to figure out how to lower the starting prices on my customs and they go and raise that! So up go my prices again, or shipping and handling. I doesn't matter which, because they take 10% of both!

So what is Ebay's take after everything is said and done these days?? I've only sold one thing on Ebay in the last 10 years and that was a Michael Jackson CD of "Off The Wall" that was a 1st pressing from Japan. I took the hit in fees because the CD cost me $3 and I sold it for $60...and it was a USED CD too. Are they up near 20% if you figure out that they also make money from Paypal?? If that's the case, it would behoove everyone to start selling on niche sites like the Museum instead of going to Ebay. I know that Ebay is huge...but they will only get bigger and more demanding. It reminds me of the whole Diamond Distributors thing with Comics. They are the only game in town and they DICTATE to the store owners what they will get and how much they will get of certain items. One more thing the Fed failed at overturning 20+ years ago...Diamond Distributors IS A MONOPOLY. So is Ebay. As long as that fact is true the fees will keep getting larger. Now does anyone know of a Comic Book site that has a forum similar to this forum?
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
      The beauty that surrounds them
      Isn't it a pity".

I sold like 900 bucks or close to it last month ..., and got dinged like 90 Bucks or close too it..., not counting what Paypal also took ... What are U gonna do ? I need stuff gone, and don't need stuff, and can use the extra funds on other stuff. It is what it is I suppose.

Shipping is out the Arse too ... for large boxes. It's Unbelievable. I got screwed over hard on a few items... shoulda researched a bit better.

Yep, it stinks, but hey raise the price. That's all you can do.

Yeah and don't forget their "Final value fee on shipping" they throw on too. It all adds up. Poor Ebay, they need every dime they can scrape up don't they?

(playing devils advocate) I'm curious, when you consider that most antique malls charge about 10% on sales, what do you guys think eBay should be charging? I mean, access to that marketplace certainly has more value than an antique mall in Des Moines, Iowa, no?

It should be 10% for Ebay plus Paypal, since Ebay owns Paypal.

To go 10% for Ebay, then whatever points for Paypal is absurd.

I'm guessing it's due to eliminating auction fees. I was wondering how big of a hole that put in their revenues.

Totally agree. Whatta you gonna do? They're living in a Coke without Pepsi world so they can charge and do what they want. Sure you can try forums like here or Ioffer or Etsy but ebay is a global market with hundreds of thousands more hits. You are basically paying to utilize their service and advertise your product on their site. Trying to sell your stuff elsewhere is damn hard. Some stuff I list in the market place will sit for months without even an inquiry but put it on ebay and I'm shipping it out eight days later (sometimes getting way more money than I was asking for it) One or two weeks selling on ebay and I can literally empty a closet out. Also places like Marketplace forums are specific to whatever that site is dedicated to. Star Wars stuff doesn't really sell well in the marketplace here and I doubt anyone here would want to buy some of the non-toy stuff I have. I've been charging a "flat shipping fee" for some time now because the post office is out of hand too. As I've mentioned before, I've only gotten really burned a few times with underestimating but usually I'm pretty close and the over/under evens out. The only way this is ever gonna change is if another auction site opens up, establishes itself as being a serious competitor with ebay, and undercuts their prices significantly enough to pull away their customers. The sites out there now just aren't doing it so it's basically a pay to play system and if you wanna sell your stuff, make extra cash, clear space, buy more stuff you want, ebay is unfortunately still the best place for it even though they blow.

That 10% is nothing new for this year (been all year long), but it is a jump from last year.
I have a detailed workbook showing the fees, so I can keep track.
ebay + Paypal together is averaging 20%. My workbooks show in 2008 it was around 12%, and 2010-2012 it was around 15%. So this year it jumped up around 5%!

Oh, I should break down this year's 20%. Ebay's combined fees (end value + shipping) are around 13-14%, Paypal is the rest. Yes, Paypal is getting quite spendy, and they don't really inform you when they raise thier rates!

The real problem that I am disliking very much is the percentage is higher when the item you're selling weighs more, as both ebay and paypal take a percentage out of the shipping, which just sucks and doesn't seem fair. So if you have something that ends for very little, and costs alot to ship, you'll make so little on it it's not worth posting. You make the best percentage on lighter first class items. That's what stupid fee scammers did to us.
I rarely post anything myself under $10 anymore, as the tiny gain isn't worth the time it takes to take and edit pictures, describe, and wait for bloated turbo lister to load.

Unfortunately, shipping prices have skyrocketed to much it cuts into the profits of the seller, or things just keep getting more expensive on ebay for the buyer.
All of the shipping services automatically raise the rates every year, no matter the economy or demand.
The most alarming raise this year was to USPS Parcel Select service, which practically doubled to match competitors. It was really cheap until this year, now it's almost at Priority rates, so the cheap things I WAS going to make money on that were large and weighed alot are now off the table, as shipping costs are worth more than the item!

Ah well, whatcha gonna do? As a buyer I'm still finding some fantastic deals on ebay, so I'm not complaining too much. I'm just making less as a seller. :(

Build a website and sell your goods. I can get a site ranked in the top ten in Google in 2 weeks. No matter how new it is.

400 bucks first month, 200 month after that. Guaranteed.

AHHHHHHHHHH....... I have no problem with Ebay making money but their greed is insufferable. After 12 years of selling on Evilbay I stopped 1year and 4 months ago(notice I keep track) and am much better for it. Good luck to you all my friends who do. I felt like they just kept making things harder not better. All I know is I'm happier now.

I don't know how new this is, but they are now withholding funds from sellers who use paypal to fulfill their transactions, for up to 21 days. They say it's only if you fall under any one of 7 different conditions. And as far as I know, I shouldn't be under any of them. But they are still withholding funds from several of my auctions.

The only thing I can think of is that I'm not a continuous seller, and they seem to delete my seller transaction ratings after 6-12 months. My feedback rating keeps going down. It use to be upwards around 300, but now it's just over 100.

It's almost enough to get someone to stop using them.
