    HD flip question

    Hey all,

I own an HD Flip camera, an ULTRA HD according to them. Taped some stuff for a documentary and they folks keep telling me the files are low res.

Me am confused. It seems pretty simple, I pull the files and they should be in HD right? Am I mistaken in this?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, it is technically HD, but the Flip cameras record at 720p (1280 x 720) rather than at 1080p.
I don't own one, but i remember reading their specs at some point a few years ago.
They record in MP4 format, and depending on which exact codec it uses for compression, it's possible that its codec is very compressed. Some people might describe its output as "low resolution". It's all relative. But even 720p HD is nearly 4 times more information than a standard def image.

Are there specific specs that the receiving party wants? It wouldn't be difficult to uprez the files in order to technically meet their 1080 specs. An uprezed image would not look any better than the native 720, but it would technically qualify. Feel free to PM me anytime to discuss further if you'd like.

Heh, OK although I'm pretty sure this is all going to involve me buying a new camera

Not to state the obvious, but usually there is some kind of quality setting. Are you sure it was recorded at the highest resolution?

I am unable to find any sort of Quality setting, it's menu is "Grandpa and Grandma" simple.

One way to check what resolution your file is in: if you have it saved on your computer, right click the file, hit "properties" then the "details" tab. If the "frame height" says 720, than at least you will know that it's in 720p, which isn't great, but technically is HD. But perhaps the compression the camera uses is not the best, causing a lower quality video? But hey, it's an excuse to buy a new "toy".
