What are your earliest memories of TV News

Another museum member and I were discussing a bit of world news yesterday, and it made me think about my earliest memories of TV new/history. The member is a little older than me and could vividly remember Viet Nam coverage.

I was born in 1967 and I remember watching coverage of some of the manned space launches from the early 70s, I remember Nixon's "I'm not a crook" speech and later his resignation. I' remember the Patty Hearst's kidnapping and also remember when the U.S. finally pulled out of Nam, but not the daily reports. I also don't remember the '72 Olympic crisis, although I've read a good bit about it later.

From Ford's presidency on, I've got pretty solid memories of the news/history.

How about you guys? What are the earliest news/history events that you recall from childhood?

A lot of mid-70s stuff like the Gong Show, Sonny and Cher, "Emergency!", ADAM-12, Dolly Parton on a swing, Donnie and Marie, and many other shows that escape me, at the moment.

Rampart, this is Squad 51. How do you read?

The Moon Landing, I remember sitting on my Fathers lap, and seeing the newspaper headlines, and my father explaining what happened. I forever
became enchanted with space. Sitting in front of the TV and hearing the terrible news that Roberto Clemente died in a air crash. Watching Nixon address the nation, i had no real understanding of what was happening. Biggest one was when in the 70's, robbers went into a sporting goods store called John and Al's where i lived, and held hostages. one of them being my neighbors son and his then girlfriend. Geraldo River working for eyewitness news covered the story.

        This is the story

Retro City: A 47-hour-long hostage situation at a sporting goods store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is still one of the longest in the city’s history and a turning point in police practices for handling similar situations.

The first thing that comes to mind that I actually remember was the day Reagan got shot.

Definitely Reagan getting shot. I'd have to check the date but I'm going to guess that I'd be about 6.

Probably the '76 election. Weird thing is,I don't remember much about the Bicentennial except when they had fireworks on the 4th.

76 was a big year with Ford vs. Carter, the Olympics, BiCentennial, King Kong and preorder for Star Wars figures, lol. Seems like FF, Thor and Conan megoes came out that summer or at least that's when I got them.

I clearly remember talking about the whole Patty Hearst incident in class since it was all over the news. I also seem to recall various observances of Pearl Harbor Day. We discussed that in school too, since we had the day off in 1 and 2nd grades. I also remember Watergate, but only b/c it interrupted normal TV viewing.

I hated the Patty Hearst stuff --- it went on and on and on --- was on TV, Newspapers, magazines and radio

I still remember my mom saying, people only talk about her because she's rich

I was born in 71 the oldest memory of news that I seem to remember is when Elvis died the reason that stuck with me is I remember my Mom was crying and I tried to comfort her. I have memories of other things that were going on later in life but this one sticks with me as my earliest.

I was born in 67, and remember lots of Bicentennial stuff, but I don't have lots of memories of news on TV. I remember watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with my dad on Sunday afternoons, which was much earlier than the bicentennial stuff, probably early 70's. My earliest news memories have to be presidential related... Nixon stuff, & Carter... I remember it being on TV, but oddly I remember Billy Carter as much as I remember Jimmy Carter! My dad worked at a beer distribution facility, so for a short while there was Billy Beer in the trunk of his car that we had to take somewhere...
