Nearly EVERY movie with a team has the team temporarily break up or separate right before the last act starts. This obviolsly includes romantic pairings as well. Haven't we had enough of this yet?
Hmmm...this was the hallmark of the JLA for 20 years.

Of course, The Sixth Sense caused a disease where, for a while, every movie had a "twist" ending - no matter how unnecessary, or how off the rails the extra info took us from the main plot we had just followed. I think for the most part this trend is dying now though.
How about where something good happens to a person right before they "kick the bucket" so that it makes the audience more sad about losing the character. SOme examples that come to my mind are in Serenity where Washburne lands the ship but then gets shot through the window or Kirk tosses Picard the remote control and then the bridge collapses and he falls.
This also blends the line with sacrificing characters: bad guy realizes that he should have been good and he takes out the even badder guy (Vader ROJ) or we think a character is dead but is able to come back before he really dies to kill himself and the threat/villian at the same time, etc.
Mine is sparkle-y vampires. Can't stand em. Vampires are supposed to be ferocious, cold hearted creatures with lustful appetites...not sparkle-y and romantic. UGH!!!
Yep, I'm so sick of romantic vampires.
Curse you, Anne Rice!!!!!
