Over the summer I've been on a quest to find the perfect hot dog, trying every store bought and deli variety I could find. Some had natural casings that were too tough to bite...many had odd aftertastes, were too salty, or too greasy, or too rubbery.

I tried Ball Park, Bar "S", Boar's Head, Gwaltney, Hebrew National, Hormel, Nathan's, Oscar Mayer, and about a dozen more deli and store brands.

I found I like Kahn's beef ones the best. Perfect combination of taste and texture, not to salty, greasy or gristly. Just a perfect "classic" hot dog.

Sabrett Natural Casing All Beef... boiled in beer.

Oscar Mayer Anghus are very good in taste and health-choice for large-brand stores like WalMart. Pure beef and very clean. Most of their stuff surprisingly is.

Best dog I've had in years is a brand called Applegate. All natural and free of everything. It was at a wholesale club, surprisingly.

My favorite brand-name hot dog of all-time was the Best Kosher dog. Unfortunately, their parent company (Sara Lee) discontinued them about a decade ago. Now, I usually search out Vienna Beef hot dogs. As a Chicagoan, I feel like it makes the best base for a classic Chicago-style dog. However, from time-to-time, I'll go to the local European-style market and grab some from their butcher/deli area. Sometimes, I'm just in the mood for an old-world style dog.

Casper's are our favorite. Not sure how wide-spread the brand is, but CostCo has them in these parts.

I prefer a good Polish/Kielbasa sausage dog over regular hot dogs.

If I'm buying them out, I'd say Casper's and Nathan's. For eating them at home, I really prefer chicken franks to beef hot dogs. Any brand, really.
