That's bad news.
Is the dog in pain due to the illness?
My dogs are old now (14 and 15), they have a hard time walking at times (usually when the weather's wet and colder), and we do realize that at a certain point, we'll have to make some hard decisions.
I hope you find a way to take away the dog's discomfort. Meds costs a lot these days....

If it's any consolation, my Shepherd/Border Collie mix has been seriously ill many times over the last few years, and she's always made it. Animals are tougher that people, and real fighters.
Don't give up the fight yourself!.
