Toy Hunter Debacle Today on Facebook

Some of you may be aware of or have taken part in a discussion on Facebook today about Toy Hunter and Jordan, others may not but I wanted to say my piece on things because I felt it needed to be covered after seeing some responses and reactions here in the past. There was a topic earlier today on the Children of the 1980's community on Facebook about this show and things turned ugly fast. People calling names, flinging insults, etc. all directed at Jordan Hembrough.

Jordan called me and we spoke at length about the issues with the show, deals, format, etc. I, like many collectors that watch the show, was of the opinion that we enjoyed seeing the toys, watched it for the toys, but season 1 Jordan was different than season 2 Jordan and we're not too fond of season 2 Jordan. I have to say, I haven't had such a switch get turned in my head in some time. Very nice guy. Awesome, genuine and concerned for the false perceptions some people have of him.

I work with people at horror conventions, am a part of the horror community, have friends and employers in performance arts, and have friends in show business and can relate to almost every single thing we discussed either personally or through past experience with people I've known for years. The man is between a rock and hard place and trying to do the best he can for a business that existed before the show and will exist for years after the show is gone. From editorial manipulation to demands from execs, he's curbing himself and doing what they say all while trying to maintain integrity, the fun of the show, and the vicarious experience.

After our conversation and shedding some light on things, I will speak nothing but kind words of this man and his efforts in the future.

I am one of the people in this hobby that has helped fill holes in people's collection for nothing but cost and shipping. I am one of the people in this hobby that will keep an eye out for months, if not years to help find those grail pieces for not only myself, but others I talk to in person or online for zero profit.

Jordan is running a business and under constant overbearing scrutiny. Cut the man a break, give him a chance, and put yourself in his shoes for a second.

Also, YAY FOR TOY HUNTER SEASON 3!

If Toy Hunters drops the celebrity angle, then I'll like the show again.

Seriously, the Danny Bonaduce episode was a low point...that non-talented hack could care less about toys, it's all about shock and vanity with him...the dude just bought the cheapest priced toys from Jordan, but when it was time to buy the expensive ones (like that very cool boxed Partridge Family bus), you immediately said to yourself, this dude don't give a crap about toys, what a cheapskate.

At least the arrogant Gene Simmons collects

Bonaduce had no business being on Toy Hunter.

I honestly don't get the whole "Season 1 Jordan" vs. "Season 2 Jordan" thing. Yes, he was a little less...peppy, but it's not like he was Anakin in Episode III who suddenly went dark because the script demanded it. I think the whole thing is blown out of proportion, and I wish folks would unclench and either sit back and enjoy the show, or not watch it if they prefer.

It's a TV show folks. Anyone who thinks Jordan controls what happens and what doesn't in regards to content is kidding themselves. He seems like a decent guy.

The weird angles the show has been taking are all executive decisions pushed out there to try and appeal to a broader audience while unintentionally alienating the core audience, which is just bad math if you ask me, but like Jordan told me, it's a constant battle and trying to appeal to Nielsen ratings and demographics.

Yeah I don't get it either. People were gripping about his energy level. Now they complain about him being more mellow. Make up your mind.

Yes, it's a TV show, and just like any TV show...it's not above criticism.

Know one said it wasn't above criticism. But I'm sure you'd agree like everything else, when it get's personal... that's out of line.

You might as well blame the key grip.

I'm not talking about the Facebook arguments, not interested in online nerd wars...I was just merely pointing out my personal take on the show.

The thing is that anytime you become a public figure, you better be prepared for incoming missiles, that's just the nature of the business, you have to develop a thick skin, that's just how it goes.

Is is right? Of course not, but it is what it is.

I hate that there is some truth to that.

Well, it's true. Especially when you play in the geek pool, you are gonna get bricks thrown at your head by fanboys no matter what you do. And it's only when it's a small-time personality in a small community (no offense to Jordan or us, but this is a small world) that you get the expectation that people should consider the guy's feelings.

No one has any problem bashing some fanboy target like Kevin Smith or whoever-is-ruining-comic-books-du-jour...and no one ever begs us to be considerate of the feelings of the poor hardworking people at Mattell. But those people are way too big to come answer questions here or directly on their Facebook page.

Once you realize they are real human beings and talk to them you are able to have some perspective and compassion and even get on their side.

I'm not saying anyone deserves to be bashed, and the toy nerd rage unleashed at Jordan is ridiculous and embarrassing for all of us, IMO, but what do you expect? It's a reality TV show about toys. Haters gonna hate.
