Cool New Book On D&D Coming Soon

    of-dice-and-men-cover.jpg

By David Ewalt, arriving late August.

Traces the roots and history of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as the culture of those who played the game.

I sure am looking forward to reading this!

If you are as well, I always urge folks to buy books at your locally owned bookstores. They love and need our support!

    Thanks

    Hmmmm....

Having lived thorugh the early 80's I'm always leary of stuff like this.... Funny thing; there's a reissue of the very original, white book game coming this fall.

    Coincidence...?

^ Not sure what you are referring to..."original white book game?"

Was this another history of D&D?

I was fortunate (or unfortunate) to have started playing D and D at age nine or so. This would have been 1979 I think. I remember the group saving up grass cutting money to go out and but new modules and miniatures to use. To the best of my knowledge this was still the original Gygax rules. It wasn't until a few years later we got the books like Monster Manual, Dieties and Demigods and the official Dungeon Masters guide and player handbook.

Here locally I've met Tim Kask a few times. He's one of the founders and was the editor of all the books. He shops my store occasionally and is really cool to talk to about this stuff since nobody else I know can relate. It's also cool that locally was the biggest miniature manufacturer in Ral Partha. I had the honor of painting a few minis for their catalogs, and my best friend was a caster there, and I got a bunch of them free. You paid by the pound, so I ended up with a serious surplus.

I'll definitely check this book out. Thanks for the heads up.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

          That is super cool.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

^^^It wasn't glorious but I did get some cool figs to work with. Around 1995 or so they really started going towards Mechs and Battletech stuff which I had no interest in. I got to watch Dennis Mise do some sculpting, which was amazingly done 1:1 scale. That was a fun time in my life.

^Cool, sounds like you have some D&D insider knowledge!

I admit, I never had any of the mini figures.

For me, the game existed in my mind...and on the graph paper we drew our dungeons on! Man, there was a brief period I really devoted a lot of mental energy to that game!

That is super cool. I have very fond memories of those miniatures! I played Advanced D&D back in school through the late 70's/early 80's and eventually left it behind. A couple of years ago my daughters spotted the D&D Red Box in a Hastings and asked me what it was. We took it home and now, two years later, I DM for our local game store on Wednesdays where they both play too. Good times!

                    >Was this another history of D&D?

There's been a few versions of the game over the years. A lot of folks remember AD&D (which was technically the fourth version) and the red book Basic D&D (the third, more or less) but there were two earlier versions. The blue book, (where I got on board WAY back in the day) which wasn't around too long and was pretty much the same as the red ones; and the very original white book set. There's a LOT of them up on ebay right now:

                    Probably 'cos of the reprints:
