    Here kitty, kitty, kitty

    whats-going-to-happen-to-the_clink_large.jpg

So, for the last five years of cougar rumors around our area, I have been firmly in the non-believer camp. With all the cell phones, trail cams, etc, how could there be big cats here and not one single person gets a photograph?

Well, I was on way down our road at 10:00 this morning heading to do some work just around the corner at Church and about 100 yards in front of me, I thought a huge dog was crossing the road. By the time it hit me what I was actually seeing, it was more than half way across. I fumbled for my purse o the floor to get my phone, but it was off the road and into the neighbor's blueberry field. With phone in hand, I drove back forth about six time, no cat.

Even though we see enough bobcats and coyotes for me to know that was not what I had just seen, I was still hesitant to call Ed at work. But when I did, he interrupted before I could tell him. He interrupted with "I thought I saw a cougar in the berry field this morning, but was afraid to tell you because you were going to think I was crazy!". My sister and I went to look for tracks, but the road is so packed down by the brining, that it is as hard as concrete.

My quiet country life has taken a creepy turn. I frequently walk back and forth to visit neighbors, and many times in the dark.

We had the same rumors in our area about two years ago. Folks claimed up and down that there was a cougar roaming the the county.

I understand they can travel within a 100 mile radius, so you may see it, and then not see it again for quite some time...or ever. Our sightings have died down to nothing in the last year and a half.

A few years back, people were seeing them around here and the Conservation Department was downplaying it, saying there weren't any in the area. Then someone hit one with a car and killed it and they called the press. They'd been here for ages and the MDC didn't want to get people riled up about cougars in their back yards, so they'd been lying to us.

Want to see something scary? Check this out. Not something I'd like to stumble into out in the dark.

We get bears on occasion but no big cats.

Here comes my annoying know-it-all felid species expertise, lol...

The four true Panthera big cats are the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard...they are the only ones that roar.

Then there are the next wave of non-roaring cats, mountain lion, cheetah, snow leopard, and clouded leopard.

Then there's the third category, lynx, bobcat, ocelot....

...and the last group, feral cats and domesticated cats.

              Yes, I'm annoying, lol.

There are mountain lions in northern California, some have even been sighted in Bay Area regional parks...actual attacks on humans are extremely rare...cougars/pumas for the most part instinctively avoid humans.

Not a cat but on the way home from Minnesota had a black bear run across the highway around the NY/CT border. Not unheard of by any means but it was a first for me. Had deer, moose, and I think an elk once, but never a bear.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

We are rural enough that we often see coyotes (in fact, we have a taxidermied one in our house), foxes, bobcats, and bears. The bobcats and bears tend to stay in the 5000 acres of state land a couple miles to east, but you can watch them from an overlook every morning as they go down to the old gravel pits. The bobcats here are small (30 lbs) as as the bears (65 lbs) so they don't concern most people.

However, the big cat stories are getting more and more common. We once caught a deer on our trail cam with obvious claw injuries to her hind quarter. My cousin who lives five doors down shot a deer last fall and after returning to his house for the quad, came back to fins his deer hanging over a tree branch. A bus driver and twenty kids on her bus swear they saw one cross the road last spring. Ed and I had chalked it up to mass cougar hysteria, but after what I saw yesterday, I am a believer.
