I just finished reading the classified section of the newspaper this morning and there is a yard sale in town this saturday and it says they have action figures from the 60's and 70's. I will report back any finds as soon as I can. I am tempted to just knock on there door today and see if there are any Megos. Is that weird? Should I just be there first tomorrow? I don't want to be wrestling with some other collector at 7 am.

Go there today tell them you have a family function tomorrow but you saw the ad and wanted to know if you could see what they had. My parents have yard sells all the time and set up a day or two in advance and I have never seen them turn down money only thing is they may not be willing to move much on there prices if they sell early. Good luck and I hope you score big time.Comment

When I had my garage sale I posted on Craigslist to attract attention. The garage sale was supposed to be from 8am-4pm and I mentioned a few things that I was going to have, among them vintage toys. I didn't get specific but the vintage toys I had were late 80's/early 90's stuff like Power Rangers, some Marvel figures, revival Star Wars, and large role playing toys like a tool bench or a kids kitchen set. The next morning I walked outside at 7 am to set up and found this guy waiting in his car in front of my house. As I set up he stood over me and watched intently asking for the toys. Of course they were in the back and the very last thing I could get to but as I was setting up I told him exactly what it was I had. After I set everything up the guy was there for two hours and bought nothing. Once of the creepiest experiences of my life. Don't be that guy.
As a buyer, I've found the expectation usually exceeds the reality. Check this article out. #1 is so true.

When I have a yard sale, I do not mind the "early birds". Rather have people camp outside my house with money to spend than people not even stopping. The only thing that bugs me about them, is that I KNOW WHY they are there. They are hoping I'm going to pull out something they can profit from. Annoys me, even though I do it!
Generally though, people do not like "early birds" and some people REALLY do not like them. Personally, I do not see what the big deal is. You have to be careful, because if you are looking for good deals, the last thing you want to do is p** s somebody off and you never know who is a nut in this world. You might not knock on the door asking about toys and he'll flip out like a lunatic.
I guess I can understand for one reason. Guy came crack of dawn and bought a ton of record albums. Right as I put the first table out. A little later a guy came for records and would not shut his mouth about how I "over hyped" the records in the ad and how long he drove to my house for them. Maybe he should of got up earlier. I was going to boot this guy out of the yard.Comment

That's why I don't have yard sales any more. We have a guy in our area that is constantly referred to on Craigslist by people that regularly have yard sales. They pretty much tell him to stay away or they will have him arrested. If you list a yard sale on CL and mention anything from jewelry to military he shows up on Thursday. I will say the best yard sale I went to was one where the seller had printed ebay auctions and taped them to the actual items to justify his asking $22 for an item that sold for $25. When I asked him why he just didn't list them on ebay, he stated that was too much work. Not as much as getting up, printing a ton of pages, setting up the sale, sitting there all day while nobody buys anything, and tearing it down and putting it all away. It's not a doll it's an action figure.Comment

I've seen eBay print outs at yard sales too. Those kind of people? I just walk away. I don't care how badly I want something.
Although recently I went to one that mentioned He-Man figures. I went and everything you picked up it was "Well, it's $20 on eBay so that's what I want, $20". She wanted $50 for the He-Man stuff. Not worth it at all. I KNEW nobody was dumb enough to pay that, so I went back at the end of the day and her tune was changed. I got the box for $25.
You can find stuff at yard sales, no doubt about it. I went to one recently that looked really crappy. I asked the old lady if she had any old toys and she came out with a box full of Lone Ranger, Mego Flash Gordon, 70s' GI JOE, Mego Chips and a bunch of other 1970s' action figures from the basement. I paid $10 for all of it. This was late afternoon too. The early bird doesn't always catch the worm, sometimes it's just the one who chirps the loudest. I ALWAYS ask if I don't see it. I got a LOT of stuff that way. The best was a 23 gallon bin full of NES and N64 games so heavy you could barely carry it for $25 about 2 years ago.
As a matter of fact, this entire summer I went to less than 3 "Estate Sales". They suck. Overpriced and shady companies, lines full of people, arguments about numbers....you can keep'em. Now, I just go strictly to local yard sales just as they are setting up. While others are still waiting on lines at estate sales, you can be walking out of drive ways with boxes full of stuff for dirt cheap.
I don't even bother with the ones advertising the stuff. That means two things: They have an idea of what they have and know people want it and others are all going to try to get that same stuff.Last edited by Den82; Jul 19, '13, 11:57 PM.Comment

Usually what I do is email the person asking if they would be willing to sell stuff early so far I have had good results with thatComment

That's another thing that sucks when people advertise what they have. A million people email them asking about a private pre-sale. That really sets the bulb off in their head. Most of the time they refuse and the day of the sale they suddenly have it in a show case now due to the offers they got.Comment

Maybe but like I said so far I have had very good results. I just ask if they have pics and ask for a price. Most times I pay there asking price, I've yet to have someone raise any red flags when I have asked about something, so far everyone has be greatComment

I agree you gotta ask if they got X, even if you don't see similar. Once in a while it works. Heading out early helps but not always. Staggered start times, hipsters oversleep and put out their killer stuff at 11:15, etc.
Hardest part is plugging away. If i don't do it relentlessly every weekend, I lose my mojo. There is a learned rhythm to it that comes with constantly hitting sales. i have so much less time now. Agreed on the ebay printouts, i see those and turn around.
