I have a hole in my retina.

So, after seeing black spots one day at work I thought I'd get an eye exam. Turns out I have a hole in my retina and may require surgery. The doc told me I am at risk of losing my sight. She also told me I had to give up mixed martial arts which sucks. I've been in mma for 15 months now and hate to give it up, but considering I just received a flush punch in the temple as soon as Wednesday, I will need to walk away.

I've had people scare the crap outta me with some stories of friends/family that happened to them while others are down playing it saying it's no big deal at all. All I know is my eyes aren't something I've taking chances with.

    Anyone every experience this?

I scratched my cornea in the 1990's on a lousy middle curtain hook. If I don't get enough sleep I can feel it sting all day. I had a recent eye exam to upgrade my driver's license to Commercial Class C and the Dr. said he couldn't detect it but 1 night I didn't get enough sleep and I felt the familiar sting.

          Sorry to heard bro........

I have a slight bad left eye, I couldn't see well anymore.... got a new eye glasses on. When I was 14, old friend of mine who threw mud at my eye at the large lake in the shadow... thought the mud war play was funny, it wasn't...... because of the smaller metal flake that stuck in the near center of black pupil, the Doc pulled the freaking metal flake off my pupil that bleed out..... My good Doc reported the lake owner who dumped metal sand flakes in the large lake is illegal... seriously!!!!

What's MMA stands for? Just curious.

My dad's retinas detached a few years ago (sadly the day before I showed up for a week long visit). It's a relatively simple procedure and he recovered at home.

Mine has black center pupil leaked like ink but healed in 3 months later since 1980.

                I recommend Wikipedia, BTW.

Like Mike said, get a second opinion.

And if your situation has been diagnosed correctly...you don't have to give up martial arts as long as it's not full contact, Kata would be a great replacement, no need to pummel people.

If you are seeing black spots...get a second opinion. I have "floaters" that I see, but they are harmless. Not saying you have these, as opposed to the more serious problem, but I'd get it checked out first.

My father-in-law is just recovering from a detached retina. Hopefully surgery will remedy your issue with the hole. My prayers are with you. I think the toughest part of the surgery for him was waiting for this little gas ball inside his eye to go away. Apparently it has something to do with keeping the integrity of your cornia intact while it heals. I wouldn't wait though. Time is usually of the essence with these things. Get a second opinion quickly.

Thanks guys. I'm awaiting the second opinion. Right now I'm admittedly frustrated at the range of opinions I've been getting from friends, family and social media. Half say "no big deal" while the other half tell me true horror stories of ppl they know. I just want the darn thing fixed.
