It's a US spy satellite that's busted or something.

They said it's got a lot of jet fuel on board... which is dangerous if it ever hits the ground..

Bush just gave orders to shoot it down using a missile from a US Navy ship.
They're going to blow it up in space.

      It suppose to happen tonight.

There are 2 ships with modified PAC 3 missiles on them. If they miss they will have more more chances to shoot it down.

They are shooting down a US Spy Sat launched in 2006. The Sat lost communications immediately after launch, and has been in a deteriorating orbit since. It has 1000 pounds of highly toxic fuel and they are afraid the fuel tank will survive re-entry.

I doubt there will be any live shots of this launch, we'll have to wait for the DOD to release a video.

Here is a picture of the USS Lake Erie. This is the ship that gets the first shot today. The USS Decatur is a destroyer and it is standing by for a second shot if needed.

I heard the satellite is the size of a giant bus. Because they have lost complete control of it and it is now orbiting in a part of space closer to the Earth's atmosphere than normal, they are afraid it will come crashing to Earth and could literally land anywhere.

They seemed pretty darn confident that this was going to work. I don't doubt them. I wonder if these type of missles could knock out potential nuclear attacks?

I know you hear so many fabrications like Reagan's Star Wars program but I have heard that we do have the capability right now to destroy every nuclear missle that could pose a threat to hitting the U.S.

I know this sounds very Sci-Fi, but i'm surprised none of this stuff (newer satellites) have self destruct options built on board to begin with.

If it's loaded with that much fuel, it shouldn't be too hard to rig up a self destruct when it was being built.

                  BTW....

Fox News said, if it ever hit earth... It would totally blow up ANYTHING within the size of 2 football fields.

The Aegis Cruisers and the PAC 3 missile are designed to be part of the missile shield. Once the system is operational they will be able to stop incoming missiles

It does have a self destruct, but when you lose communications, you can't push the button.

                        Oh,
I didn't know it had a self destruct and they lost communications with it.

Never believe your own hype.... Even if you could hit an incoming missile, debris is gonna land SOMEWHERE. Thats' why Canada wasn't too thrilled with the "Star Wars" system when first proposed: in a global thermonuclear exchange between the US and Russia them missiles would have come over the north pole. (shortest route) When shot down the debris would have fallen about half way.

                            *sigh*
