Kung Fu Theatre, Million Dollar Movie, The Drive-In & other TV movies

Remember before cable TV when the local networks made a big deal out of showing old movies on TV? I've listed some of them in my title. Others I remember were:

    Chiller Theatre
    Fright Night
    Creature Feature
    The 4:30 Movie
    ABC's Movie Of The Week
    The CBS Late Movie

Almost all of these intros can be found on You Tube. Did you have any favorites? Any funny stories about them?

About the only one we had was The CBS Late Movie and ABC's Movie of the Week. I always thought it was a big deal to watch one of them.

Didn't they show episodes of "The New Avengers" on The CBS Late Movie? I seem to recall watching those...

Kung-Fu theater, with the Five Deadly Venoms et al was fun to watch. The 4:30 movie (abc ch.7) was probably one of my favorites, though. (Superheroes, monsters, Vincent Price week)

ABC had the Million Dollar Movie at 3:00 PM! The promos showed this glittering golden case (film canister?) rotating around, flashing in the hot TV studio lights! It was an awesome specacle for a 10-year old kid who got off a little early from school that day in 1975-1981 or so....

Also, in Houston we had two different but equally *****in' late-night horror shows: TERROR Theater, and Plenty Scary Movie. I used to say up past midnight on Saturdays waiting for the monster to show up. I usually fell asleep before it did.

These were staples in my childhood and hold for me some really great movie memories...

Chiller Theatre: Dear God that opening was soooo freeking scary when i was a kid it would give me nightmares! lol! It was sooo bad that my Dad who watched it had to lower the tv so I wouldn't hear it when i was going to Bed.....lol!

4:30 Movie: I still curse the day when The people's court and The news took over my beloved 4:30 movie spot. My sister and I made sure that our homework was done before it started...we had our favorite weeks mine were..Monster week, Elvis week,Superhero week etc...

The ABC movie of the week was also great! I'll never forget seeing the two night showing of Superman!

Creature Features: was always good for classic Monster movies which I loved!

Cbs late night: I remember seeing Conquest of the Planet of the Apes when it was on....

Million Dollar movie: I'd watch when they gave monster movies like King kong escapes and War of the Gargantuas

Kung Fu Theatre: The World stopped in my neighborhood when that was on all my friends would come over and crash in my parents living room to see the flicks and then as soon as it was over we'd head outside and act out what we saw.....The Five deadly Venoms became one of my all time favorites....

How about The Sunday morning movie on WPIX with Abbott and Costello also the Tarzan movies that ran on WNEW on channel 5 in NY.....

There used to be a show here called TJ and the ANT (stood for Television Jockey and the All Night Theater.) They used to have an APES week of their own, but for some reason they never showed CONQUEST or BATTLE. Their APES week consisted of PLANET, BENEATH, ESCAPE, King Kong, and Son of Kong.

Is that anything like BJ and the Bear? (Sorry, but I just couldn't resist!)

In Philly, the Million Dollar movie ran at 11:30pm on Ch.6 (WPVI). Years later a friend of mine used to play the theme on his guitar while the rest of his bandmates tuned their instruments or wasted time between songs.

This is a later open (1986), but its the same theme-

You know, we don't have any of that old, cool stuff here at WABC anymore, but here is the open to the 4:30 movie0
