The ironic thing about Elvis is that as he physically and mentally deteriorated, his vocal abilities reached their peak. Vocally, he was his most powerful at the end.

It's easy for us now to look back and see his downward spiral as evident, but it wasn't at the time. He was performing, but he really wasn't before the cameras. That's why his death was such a shock. Everyone had this image of Elvis as "Elvis" at the time of his death, with no clue of the bloated, drug addicted, recluse Elvis that has since come to light.

That's a hard choice to pin down.
I like the early, rebel Elvis stuff in the 50's and prefer his look of the late 60's/early 70's but my favorite Elvis music is the stuff he did from "The Memphis Record" up till the end. I don't like seeing him all fat & bloated.

For me, knowing how utterly rotten Elvis was behind the scenes taints my view of him today.

            If I had to pick.

Then I pick as you call it....
"1970's Elvis Las Vegas / Kung Fu Fighting / Jump Suit / Soul"

I always like the music he did in the 70's best. He was vocally the most powerful and he knew where he was in life. Up until 1976, he was the greatest performer on stage. People from all ages would come to see him. Not many performers have that happen.

Elvis, any era. I often hear people make a distinction between Elvis pre Army and post Army. He did a lot of good work after his stint in the military.

And with the rise of Bollywood in popularity, just watch his movies become cool again!

Any era, doesn't matter, Elvis was the king Baby!!!
I was born in the early seventies but my dad always had the 50's & 60's stuff playing so to me it is all the same.

The Vegas Years were Elvis at his best!

Popular culture has confused a lot about Elvis, but Elvis was never a joke during his lifetime. His best stuff was from the '68 Comeback to Aloha From Hawaii in 1973. Joe Esposito says, if the beginning of the end could be pinpointed, it would be immediately following the Aloha From Hawaii Broadcast.

Here's a sample of Elvis in Vegas.

I kinda liked the sixties version best...cause of the movies I guess? Its hard to pin down a period....always had a like dislike thing going for the guy, because my Dad and a couple of my Uncles knew him from his truck driving -pre-superstar period, and everyone of them hates the guy because he was such a lazy sob! To this day anyone of them will go into a rant if they walk into a room and see his mug on the tv, or hear him on the radio. Could be they are jealous of his success I guess?

At that time he'd blow a fart on stage and not even care if anyone heard him

Colonel Parker was probably bottling them to sell to the fans!
