    The 80's From A 70's Kid's Perspective

I realize the age of the board has gotten a bit younger, but for the 70's was when I was a kid. The 80's was when I was a teen.

I was dong the nostalgic thing for Members Only memories the other day and was wondering how some of the other 70's kids here look back at the 1980's- angst, fun, dating, etc.?

As Mego-oriented was my 70's, the 80's were all about video games, girls and, probably, the most about music. I really started to dive deeper into the bands I liked and it led me more and more into college and "underground" bands. Early on, however, I remember a brief flirtation with New Wave stuff as I began to explore. That turned to some songs I haven't thought about in ages-

Personally, I'd like to skip the 80s. It wasn't really a fun time for me. I went to live w/ my dad and his common law wife and kids, and it was just a bad scene. The teenage years SUCKED. I got married in '86 and it wasn't all bad, but I'm just not a person who should've ever been or should ever be married. I divorced in '92. I'm sticking to the 70s.

I like Blondie and The Ramones but they're more 70s than 80s,I liked the 80s till 1988.

I find it interesting that those that grew up in the '70s dont really care for the '80s and a number of people I know who grew up in the '80s think the '90s are awful.

I havent been to fond of the last ten years. I guess as we grow older things begin to feel/seem more recycled.

I think the seventies would have been great. I was born in '73 but I can barely remember anything before '79-'80. Personally, I think it could have been alot of fun: great show, music, and culture.

I wonder how many people were geeky enough to buy an Atari or Apple II/Atari computer when they were first released?

80s wasn't bad. Agree the 90s stunk big time. That's when the major chains started to go under.

I was a Kid Of the 70's and loved the toys, but Hated most of the music, except for Queen,Bowie and Meatloaf...lol I was into Elvis and The Beatles. Loved the 80's I still collected a few figures first wave Gi Joe and He-man and Super Powers and I was heavily into 80's music and Lot's of Girls..lol ,BUT I can't really listen to most of the 80's music now.

I don't knock the music scene now, it does not Belong to me...I now choose and pick what I want to listen to.....

You know it's true, but I think it has a lot to do with how old you were at which time. It seems like many of us have really fond memories (or at least now see them as fond) of the time before we were 10 years old. Puberty and high school is really rough for some people and they just don't remember it fondly. I consider myself lucky that I really have fond memories of both periods of my life.

I got an Atari 2600 (we just knew it as Atari) pretty early on and I thought it was the height of mankind's development.

Makes sense. I started High School around '89 and it seems like that was around the time there was drastic changes all around me. (which I hated)

Remember seeing a Apple II in elementary school (around '81) and thought it was the most advanced thing on the face of the earth with its green monochrome screen. I didnt see a atari 2600 until '83 but I did have a Intellivision (which is actually more advance).

Regarding music: I listen to '70s and '80s radio music with a little bit of '90s thrown in. I would listen to disco before any modern music. My taste in music hasnt changed much. I use to sit and listen to Casey Kasem every sunday uninterrupted.

The 70s and mid 80s were great years to be a kid I'm not a big fan of the 90s at all.

Being an 80's kid, I gotta say I loved them..I was a teen in the 90's and I loved them just as much...both decades were great to me

I partied hard between 82-95. Crammed a lot of living in there, including a six month period in 1987 when I went out every single night. My poor liver! Eventually that lifestyle became boring and I settled down. Been with my wife now for nearly 18 years.

I hope my son has as much fun in his teens/twenties as I did.

                          I hope my daughter doesn't!

Pop culture after 1995 is okay, I guess. I try not to live in the 1980s time-warp that some of my friends are trapped in. There's still good music being made, just increasingly not on the radio. I do miss fashion. What's in fashion these days? Does fashion still exist? Back in my day you had to get dressed up to go out. None of this jeans and a T-shirt business.

Modern kids don't play with toys and they don't have fashion. Nostalgia in 2030 will be about video games and old internet sites. Nothing real world. Is the future a virtual one? Can we wear virtual flares?

On that note, I don't understand retro fashion mockery. At least we had fashion, you young whippersnappers! Meh! Now GET OFF MY ASTROTURF!

I was a kid in the 70s, teen in the 80s.....after seeing Return of the Jedi, I think my childhood officially ended. Got into other things after that.......D and D, music, a little partying and chasing girls. The 1980s get a bad rap as being a culturally bad time but it was my time.
