It's a sad day for lovers of classic and awesome movies. Ray Harrihausin passed away at age 93. In a time before special effects were done by teams of people Ray was a one man show and generated some of the best and most memorable special effects creature scenes of all time through stop motion animation. In the age of CGI, stop motion animation needs explanation for some. Stop motion animation meant that you built miniature sets, props and creatures and moved them a little bit, shot a frame of film, moved them a little bit and shot another frame of film until you had the scene. It was labor intensive and required great concentration (especially if you are doing several creatures). And Ray not only did it, he took the creatures he animated and breathed life and personality into them. He took fearsome creatures and through his animation had you feel for them. Ray inspired legions of people to go into filmmaking and special effects just as he had been inspired by Willis O' Brian's work on King Kong. Ray felt blessed to actually be able to work with and learn from O' Brian culminating in Ray's first job (besides the stop motion films of fairly tales he did himself) on the movie Mighty Joe Young. I was able to meet Ray Harrihausin some years ago when he was promoting the release of his book (a fantastic coffee table book detailing his work on his movies). He was everything you wanted him to be. A kind, gentle soul who loved how his work was a source of joy and inpiration to many. May he rest in peace and may his legacy never die.
He was one of the most influential people in the entire history of film and a true visionary. I would love to see a stop motion movie made today in his honor instead of CGI.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.
Just watched Sinbad let week. Gwangi was a favorite, but Jason was the best. Shame he lent his name to a truly awful run of comic books of his characters, but his work was film anyway. Without Harryhausen there would be no Star Wars. A true legend, RIP
Sorry to hear of his passing. A true genius. I think the skeleton battle in "Jason and the Argonauts" is one of the greatest moments in movie history. R.I.P. Mr. Harryhausen. Thank you for all the great entertainment and memories.
I love Jason and The Argonauts and It Came From Beneath the Sea. RIP Harry. You were a great talent.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."
At the moment I really can't think of a SINGLE human more universally respected in the context of this Museum crowd... and rightfully so... RIP
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
