    R.I.P. Ray Harryhausen

Legendary visual effects pioneer and stop-motion model animator Ray Harryhausen has died. The multi-award winner was a major influence on many of the biggest film makers of today with the likes of Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas and John Landis all citing his impact. Over nearly five decades his work broke new […]

Aw crap, terrible news. He was involved in so many films that I loved watching when I was a kid (and still do now). RIP Mr. Harryhausen...

What a legendary talent...he will be sorely missed. Hope he and Ray Bradbury can hang out and talk dinosaurs once again...

He seemed to have such a genuine enthusiasm for his work, and his work felt so rich with that extra care. For me, he influenced a whole other level appreciating toys and models. My brain doesn't normally separate "craft" and "art", to me they're the same thing - but I have a feeling his work had something to do with the wires in my brain being crossed at an early age.

He was truly one of my heroes. He lived his entire life being a kid at heart. His influence will forever live on.

Had the tremendous pleasure of meeting him at Wonderfest. And spent a good amount of time talking to him about his career and the craft in general. A wonderful human being with tremendous integrity and respect for any who greeted him. A very humble soul with a kind heart. The Heavens are shining bright today. You will be missed Ray.

Ray Harryhausen is my idea of how talent in Hollywood SHOULD be like. He often claimed he wasnt as good as Willis O'Brien (animator of King Kong) but I felt he went far and beyond what O'Brien and other early stop motion animators did and took it to another level. He was a fantastic painter as well, his pre-production art is a beauty to behold. I would have loved to have seen a traditional animated film based on his drawings. I wish I could have seen his version of famous superheroes as well.

This is sad news, indeed. I knew he was getting up there in age but this is the kind of person you never want to leave. He has had a major impact on how I view films. I can tell that most action filled FX films dont have the kind of love he put into them.

Lastly, when ever I watch Sinbad and the eye of the tiger it brings me back to the first time I saw his work as a kid in 1st or 2nd grade seeing it for the first time in the school library on projector. I have NEVER forgot how exciting the visual effects were. IT and Clash of the titans ARE my Star Wars.
