I can't completely agree with that analogy, Mike.
The Beach Boys, while having a lot more parameters in their lyrics than the Beatles, I'd say that musically (compisitionally, stylistically) they were pretty deep with their choices... enough so that the Beatles stated a compettition with them and, to me, that essentially put the two bands on the same playing field artistically, while maybe a band like The Animals were of lesser artistic quality (not to open THAT can of worms!).

I will concede that I don't know much about The Guess Who, so maybe your analogy runs closer than I'd know for that reason alone.
