When I read "home fries" in your post, it for some reason, sounded to me like southern food,...maybe because of sayings like "good, old, down home cooking". Before looking it up, I would have put it in the same strange and mysterious category as grits, okra and cornbread.

You contrast it with hashbrowns. Question,..is it a breakfast food for you? I have seen the occasional restaurant that serves american fries with breakfast, but for the most part, here they would be served with lunch or supper.

Here, NJ and PA most diners give home fries with your breakfast whether you order them or not.

Never heard of getting them for lunch or supper unless you ordered them specifically

here, they are a breakfast thing

I prefer hashbrowns, by far. However, in NYC (and maybe throughout the Northeast), they are virtually unavailable. Since I've lived in New York, I've learned to like home fries, but being from southern Indiana, I'm a hashbrowns guy.

We have fried potatoes ("home fries") with all sorts of meals. Of course, we have breakfast for dinner (supper) rather frequently, too.

Homefries. Hashbrowns seem like a waste to me.

I prefer hash browns, since they seem to crisp up better than home fries.
I am more than machine. More than man. More than a fusion of the two.

I like putting other things (onions, bell peppers, bacon) in the home fries, though. Frying them in the bacon grease is incredible.
