Makes me glad that I have never eaten one.

Moon pies and RC colas were considered cheap snacks. Off-brand items. The literary connotation is that you're eating them because you can't afford name brand or better quality. And, yes, there can be a racist inference to eating a moon pie.

My dad grew up in the latter stages of the Great Depression and any kind of store-bought item was a treat, moon pie or not. A treat to one kid might be cheap or common to another.

I had them as a kid and they're available in just about any convenience store in the South and they taste about the same to me now. The fresher they are the better. No telling how long the shelf date is on them because I'd say I've eaten more stale ones than fresh.

I used to go to this restaurant in the south called Po Folks when I was a kid. I remember them having signs of Moon Pies and RC Cola together for a dessert option. I used to like the combo as a kid. I'm sure Moon Pies are so generically modified nowadays that they taste very different.

Yep, they are almost always stale at the convenience stores. I usually pass them up for powered donuts. Moonpies in a box of 6 is usually fresher.
