My condolences. Always a horrible time.

The weird thing I found after we had our old golden retriever put down (just before Christmas) was not the predictable hole in the heart, but the hole in the house. At night I'd walk around a dog bed that wasn't there. I'd go to check the water in a bowl that wasn't there. In fact it's now April and I still sometimes do it.
