Recently, I was listening to my Beatles CD collection, and I finally decided that I wanted to put the Beatle songs, that were missing from their UK versions, onto the correct albums that they should have been in.
As many of us here in the US we had the Capitol versions, which when I was growing up I was use to because, I had not known about the UK versions which were the correct versions.....except the UK versions, had missing hit songs from the Beatles albums due to the fact, that at the time Singles were more important than the albums were.
Songs like,"I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves" you did not appear on any "official" Uk versions except for their mid sixties "A Collection of Oldies" album. "Past Masters" remedies this by collecting all the songs that did not appear on The UK or US versions.
For me, I always wanted those songs restored to the albums, that they should have appeared on...they have yet to do this. I always believed that "Strawberry Fields" and "Penny Lane" should have been put on Sgt.Peppers where they actually belonged....I recently made my own version adding those songs to it, and it makes the album even better.
Now, I still like the US versions, but only for nostalgic reasons, I do still like "Meet The Beatles" and "The Beatles Second Album" but after that it becomes a bit of a mess. As Capitol tried to cash in on the Beatles and began releasing their own versions taking songs from the Uk versions. Rubber Soul and Revolver were "Butchered" by Capitol to make the Infamous Yesterday and Today album which had tracks from both albums....When I later replaced my Beatle albums with the UK cd's I thought they made better sense, but was still frustrated that songs were missing.
My Hope, in my Dreams, is that they finally put out someday the albums corrected with all the songs where they should have been....until then I can burn them myself....lol
So for those who listen to the Beatles which do you prefer the UK or US versions?.....
Steve.
