Ever make a Pop Culture reference...

that No one of the younger generation gets?
Happens at my job all the time. Stuff that is common knowledge to us is alien to them. Ill quote STAR WARS movies, THE BREAKFAST CLUB and more only to get a blank stare.
This ever happen to anyone else?

Every day. In my high school classes. I give them homework designed so they can understand my foreign language.

I have a coworker who is 25. She actually gets more of it than you think, but I still get a puzzled look from time to time.

On the flip side, another coworker from a few years back was just about 6 or 7 years younger than me, and she didn't get hardly ANY pop culture references. I think she was raised in a cave or something...

Thankfully, most of my co-workers are my age or older. The youngest of us is my co-worker's son, age 23, whho works w/ the after-school group. Sometimes he'll looked puzzled when a group of us is talking about something. When I used to work w/ the after-school group and I'd make a pop culture reference from my time, of course the kids wouldn't get it, so I'd bring in a toy, bubble gum cards, or something else related to what I was talking about. They would have fun w/ that. A parent even gave me a gift card, w/ a card that said something like "Thanks for Charlie's Angels, baton group, Shaun Cassidy and Star Trek. You make the after-school program so much fun."
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

Couldn't have said it better myself. I work with a youngster who is the same.I made WEIRD AL reference and he had no clue whatsoever as to who he was. He never saw the first 3 STAR WARS either.
My co workers 25 and up get my references but still give me a weird look at times.

You sound like my Biology, Physics and Government high school teachers. Lucky enough I was hip to the lingo and pop cultures of the past so always caught the reference. And this was days before the internet.

My Biology teacher was so impressed he would let us hang out with him and talk about music and movies. Ended up going to college with him. He went for his masters and I was just doing my undergrad.

As for the pop culture reference, happens all the time and I'm teaching my daughters properly.
Good example is my 12 year old History teacher made a reference to a Ferris Bueller quote and she ended up responding correctly. Got a big smile from the teacher. Also he did a reference to a Beatles lyric and she got it again. Yup, she is doing well in THAT class.

                    Exactly....LOL

I work with guys from both ends of the spectrum. From 23-58 I get the both of theirs the older guys get most of mine but the younger ones seem stunned or lost...LOL
Yesterday at work one of the older guys remarked my beard reminded him of grizzly adams,we laughed a younger guy asked me if he was a guy that retired before he started,I said yes,it was an older guy named Dan Adams nickname Grizzly because of his beard...
I guess I could have told him about Dan Haggerty and grizzly Adams but it wouldn't be as funny then.

I teach 8th grade English. This is part of my daily routine. Here's an example; At the beginning of the year I asked the kids to write down one of their goals for the future. One kid wrote "I want to meet Adam West." Here's how the rest of that conversation went:
Me: "I met Adam West once. It was so long ago he was still allowed to wear his Batman suit during autograph signings."
Student: "Why was Adam West wearing a Batman suit?"
Me: "Because he played Batman on TV."
Student: "There's a Batman TV show?"
Me: "Yeah, it's from the 60's. It one of the best TV shows ever and kind of what Adam West is known for."
Student: "Oh, I only know him as Mayor West from Family Guy."
Me: "Well for years after the show ended he used to sign autographs and since he was known as Batman, he would show up in his Batsuit at these apperances. It was kind of cool to meet the guy playing Batman while he was dressed as Batman. But then Warner Brothers stepped in and told him not to wear it anymore because of the new Michael Keaton Batman movie coming out. They wanted to distance themselves from the gray and blue costume."
                      Student: "Who's Michael Keaton?"
"Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."

Almost sounds like that episode of The Simpsons with Adam West with Bart wanting to know who's Robin.

I told one of my employees that I use to have the "kavorka" when I was younger ....from the Seinfeld episode where Kramer almost picks up the nun....anyway, he looked at me like I had three heads...had no idea what I was talking about. Hmmmm....either that or just by looking at me he knew I was lying.

Kavorka is hilarious, I laughed out loud at that reference. I made a Lone Ranger reference in my classroom the other day and the kids looked at me like a room full of little owls. He was really before my time too but I still know who he is. Why do we know these things that preceded us but kids now consistently show me that they don't?
