    Yesterday...

50 years ago this Friday, "Please, Please Me" was released in the UK and pop culture changed forever. While the Beatles were before most of our times, no doubt we've all been influenced by John, Paul, George and Ringo either directly or indirectly.

What do the Beatles mean to you?

The Beatles were a huge influence on me growing up. They landed in the U.S. 2 months before I was born. Growing up, I played the 45 single "Hard Days Night" like a million times!
"Rock" has been my only choice of music since.

Back in the late 70's my father bought a house to renovate and rent out to tenants as a way to make extra income. During the renovation, he found the previous owners had left some records behind...My fathers music taste begins and ends with The Rat Pack and when he brought these albums home, I don't think my parents had any clue that they would pretty much begin my love of music.....Meat Loafs Bat Out Of Hell, The Steve Miller Bands Greatest Hits, Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits, The American Graffiti Sound Track, and The Beatles Abbey Road and Hey Jude. Those last two albums mentioned are two of my all-time favorites. Those late 60's albums are also from my preferred Beatles era to listen to. Here Comes The Sun was my favorite song as a child. When my son was born, it was the first song I played for him.

When my family got their first CD player back in the early 80's, the first two albums I ever got on Compact Disk were Buddy Holly's Greatest Hits and The Beatles For Sale. I was 5 years old and picked them out myself.

My aunt was a screaming Beatlemaniac when they first came over in the 60's. She went to the concert at Shea Stadium in August of 64' whne she was 14 years old. When she passed a way four years ago, she willed me her stub from that concert and her entire record collection which included every Beatle album in dead mint condition including the Yesterday & Today Butcher Album and The Beatles White on white vinyl.

Last year we went to see Rain, the Beatles show, on Broadway. My son and I went and loved it so much, two weeks later we were back in the theater seeing a second time.

It could never be over stated what the Beatles meant to our culture even above and beyond music itself. John in particular was who I connected with, so to speak.
There are several songs I remember in real time, as they were released. Yellow Submarine, Let It Be come to mind. They were the first band to use deliberate gutair feedback, first band to mic the drum set, first band to use backward recording, first band to play a stadium, first band for so much that todays artists take for granted. They are the measuring stick for all thing music. They are who all artists are compared too.

While I'll be 49 this year, I have a vivid memory of the Beatles when they were still together. My oldest brother was intensely into them while my parents were NOT. It was most certainly a time when generations clashed on a large scale. I can remember the student riots, and Lennon being raked over the coals for his comment about the Beatles and Jesus. I can also remember my brother's obsession with the rumor Paul McCartney was "dead' because he didn't wear shoes on the Abby Road cover. And when the Manson murders came into play, my brother dragged me downstairs in the basement where his room was and turned off all the lights and blared Helter Skelter. I was a very timid kid and that scared the daylights out of me. In retrospect that was a pretty mean spirited thing to do given the context of the song with those murders. For obvious reasons I hated them as a kid. The band's edgy drug culture image was a little too much for a little kid like me. Those were uneasy times and it's little wonder I was so immersed into things like Batman and '67 Spider-man. It's also no surprise they were big hits with kids and young adults. Society needed an outlet and those shows provided that. But I digress. I fell in love with the Beatles once I got into college in the early 80's. By then, time had healed those wounds from my early experiences and impressions. Today they hold a very special place as one of my favorites. Quite the evolution!

Thats for sure. I grew up with my parents listening to them on records or in the car so its easy to know many of their songs just from that.

One of my favorite memories is an old VHS tape that had early cartoons with The Beatles music as its backdrop.

While there are some Beatles songs I like, I'm not exactly a fan. I do have memories when I was little of my older sister playing the album w/ "Come Together" on it. (had an apple on the label). I'm more of a Beach Boys kinda gal.

Paul McCartney has been a huge influence in my life. IMHO those Liverpool boys were lucky fellows to have had the chance to work with a man who's the Beethoven of the XXth century.

As a scholar, I believe not too long from our days Seminars on History of Western culture will have to recognize his deep influence as one of the most extraordinary composers that ever lived.
