Could you climb the ropes in gym class ?

a big fat NO for me

Most times I took the F without even trying - not wanting to look like a jackass in front of the gals

yes I could...in high school we were taken to a Marine corps obstacle course once a year and i was able to do it all 3 ways easily..
1-regular using your feet to help you up
2-with your legs straight out not using your feet
3-1 rope on each arm(very hard only 2 of us complete this one)

lol i was just super lean , I ran a lot and did a lot of military style exercises all day long...Push ups ,sit ups , pull ups , dips...I weighed 150-160 with like 6-8% body fat thru out High school , I had the record for most push ups in a minute , dips, and the shuttle run

It was really hard to get into that shape, i'll never have that motivation again chicks use to love it..at 150 I could bench press 250+ , i could do dips with a 100lbs. weight strapped to my waist..amazing the stuff you could do to try and impress a girl to get a piece of ace

          Absolutely,

Back in HS, when I was playing football, we had to do circuit training in gym class during the fall semester. There were about a dozen different stations. In order to get an A in class, you had to be able to complete 3 laps in under 45 minutes and at the highest level of reps. The stations included the rope climb, pull ups on rings, dips, jump rope, stair climb, pushups, situps, ladder walk, wrist curls, lifting sandbags, and a couple others I'm forgetting. For the rope climb, it was just one climb of 25-30 feet each lap, but you had to start from a sitting position and climb it without your legs ever touching the rope. I got A's every year, but I was a little nervous my junior year because I did it all on a gimpy leg (turns out I'd been playing with a broken fibula for the last 4 weeks of the season).

It was a royal pain in the arse, but everyone had to do it, and it definitely helped us in football with conditioning, which was critical for a small school with only 150 kids and a football roster of around 35. There were a couple of classes I wasn't as strong in, so having an A in gym class was a good way to boost your GPA. Anyway, it kept me on the honor roll. I miss being in that kind of shape. But, I don't miss the sound of farts ripping through the gym as we all tried to get through the situp station as quickly as we could. Man, there was this guy who always had the worst beer farts and he'd always start the training at the situp station and ruin it for everyone else. If he wasn't a great linebacker (and a great source for porn and beer in high school), I probably wouldn't have laughed it off as much back then. Then again, it was extra incentive to get through that portion quickly.

BTW, even though I'm a big, fat slob now, I can still do a rope climb. But, I can't do it without my legs.

Was I able to when I was young, yes. Could I do it now, hell no. I should be able to but fatherhood has turned me into a softie.

I could do it in High School, I played football and was on the wrestling team so it was not hard to do plus I had to do it a lot more after High School when I joined the Marine Corps and was sent to basic training.

Believe it or not, I don't think we EVER did that, from elementary to high school.

I had a tough time with chin-ups/pull-ups. Finally, in like 4th or 5th grade it CLICKED, and I could do it.

I tried doing some pull-ups at a playground with the kids a few years ago and pulled a muscle in my neck. Walked around with my head bent to one side for well over a week...

I never could do chin-ups either

                      I have very weak arms

To be 100% honest any girl could beat me at arm wrestling

That was tough. Then there was the chance of the rope slipping out of your hands and getting rope burn.

I could do chin ups by middle school but I still wasnt as big as some of the kids around me.

Did your gym have olympic week? We would do sprints, vollyball, etc., with prizes at the end. Those were fun.

I played football, but in no way shape or form could I have completed a rope climb. We didn't even have one on campus. In junior high and high school, the pe classes were basically playing basketball. If you played a sport, you just reported to it for your final class and practiced. In off season, we'd lift weights 3 times a week and run and do agility drills and run the other two.

Ropes of any sort confounded me.
