And I want to make a public apology to Zemo. My comment was meant to be a joke, but it was in poor taste. And I know better.

I have a Motorola Defy XT through Republic Wireless. Not the latest/greatest specs, and the service can be a little weird. Republic Wireless offers hybrid wifi/cell service. When I'm at home or at work, the phone grabs its signal from wifi, and when I'm on the road, it goes through Sprint's cell network.
However, it's a smartphone with Android, and the bill is only $19 a month for unlimited everything. I can't see spending $70+ a month on a phone.Comment

Just got for a Samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g for virgin mobile a few weeks ago. Since it's monthly but no contract it's always a phone or two behind the newest ones. I personally love it. Has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it and I'm pretty much done adding stuff. My "old phone" an LG Optimus Elite was nice entry phone but it was contantly running out of space even after I would delete things and most stuff was on the SD card. So I caved and hopefully won't have to upgrade again anytime soon.Comment

I have an old Sanyo flip phone that I love. No texting or anything fancy, just phone calls. Anything else is redundant for my needs and just more money I don't have. I will say that some of the latest smart phones are pretty fancy. Related question, not to MegoSteve in particular, but everyone,....
I have heard this from a lot of people here and it has me thinking. Are landlines cheaper in other places? Nobody wants to pay that much for a cell phone, but here, at least, a landline costs more than that. I paid $55 for a basic land line. By the time I added call waiting, caller ID, long distance, and taxes, my land line bill was around $100 a month. I have no problem paying $20 more a month for two cell phones that do absolutely everything. I know I get a raw deal on auto insurance/registration here in Michigan, but are we also getting the short end of the stick on phone rates?sigpicComment

I keep saying that we're going to get rid of the landline, but if I unbundled it, my cable and internet would go up and I'd end up only saving $10/month over what I pay now. Until our daughter gets old enough for me to feel comfortable giving her a cell phone (she's 9 right now) in a few years, I guess we'll keep our landline so her friends can call her.
At $100/month, that landline bill seems like it's begging to be removed from your life. I'd look around for another carrier. If you already have cell phone coverage through AT&T, they may be able to offer you a deal on a landline as well. Regardless, it's something I'd look into.Comment

That seems pretty high. Then again, I remember the old days of having a landline with a phone company that ended up with a higher package than I was expecting (somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 or so each month). Once I bundled my cable and internet with my phone service, the price went down a lot. For monthly phone, everything included, it's roughly $40 per month as part of our package.
