USPS now offering free package tracking

Stopped by my local PO this morning to mail an eBay package. I always add delivery confirmation, and was surprised when the clerk didn't ask me if I wanted it. When I requested it, she said tracking is automatically added now for free (started on 1/28) on all packages. The number for the tracking label appears on the receipt.

So we'll see how this goes. Since it's now free and not an added service, I have a hard time believing scanning efforts along the package's route and delivery will be as.. rigorous?

Yea, I found this out today too. I sent a small package first calss and was told the tracking is now added for free.

Good! Happy to hear this, now there is no excuse for not getting a tracking number for purchases.

Yeah, this is great, but postal rates are going up again, so it's the least they could do.

Yep, just shipped an item a couple of days ago, and found about the included tracking, that's great news.

It is great news IF their tracking actually worked. Up to this point it has been nearly worthless and usually only shows an item has been delivered well after the fact. More then once we have contacted our eBay buyers to make sure they got their item as the tracking info was worthless.

I have found that in the last year, when I track a package, it shows nearly every stop it's made. Not just receipt and delivery.

24 hrs since I mailed the package, this is the message I get when I plug the label# on my receipt into track/confirm:

Delivery status information is not available for your item via this web site. A return receipt after mailing may be available through your local Post Office.

Just got back from the PO

The postmaster said First Class still has NO delivery confimation

She also said the new Parcel Post will be called Standard Post
