This brings up a good point. I live in central Ohio, so we get all 4 seasons. I have a big sloping roof that faces more or less south. It's nice in the winter because it can capture some sun, but it's brutal in the summer. Any suggestions? That piece of roof is over a vaulted ceiling, and I don't know how good the insulation is. I've thought about solar panels, but I'm skeptical.

Edited to note that this is my 1000th post.
1000 posts and on a good one too, The adding of solar panals would be major big bucks. Facing due south you would benefit from them yes but remember we are in Ohio, how many days of direct sunshine do we really get.
The cheapest thing to put up in that vaulted ceiling would be a ceiling fan, run it year round. Warm air rises so in the winter in keeps it down on you and in the summer it will pull it up. You just change direction the blades are spinning. Just run it on low.
Ussually Home Depot runs specials, if you buy 8 bags of blown in insulation, you get the use of the machine for free. If you can get to that part of the house through the attic, that would be one way to go.

I'm not aloud to to touch the theromastat or AC. Seriously. It's one of the few "rules" of the house I adhere to. It's set to 71 though.

I let nature control it right now. We had frost this morning, 36 degrees. Punky has a sweater on. BRRR.

Same here D. I need a fan running or I can't sleep. It's a pain dragging it with on vacation.

I have the new NEST thermostat. You sync it up with your home's wifi and you can program it via a webpage and it also has an app that I can use to monitor it and change the setting from anywhere. I keep it set at 65 at night and 70 during the day. The thermostat also senses when no one is home and turns it down to 65, then back up when we get home.
