But Guitar Man is a great tune and Bread is a close second...still prefer America's songwriting

Hmmm...I love both groups, but I think I'll have to go w/ Bread. This one is one of my faves, although it makes me cry:

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

In my opinion, both were great groups/bands. I don't think I can choose.

This isn't even a contest. To me Bread was kind of the male version of The Carpenters, they made some good songs but you'd be embarrassed if anyone caught you listening to them. Give it the "windows down at the red light test." Sister Golden Hair, Horse With No Name, and Ventura Highway are three of the greatest classic rock songs ever. If any of these songs comes on the radio while your stopped at a red light, you turn it up. If anything by Bread comes on, you turn it off.

I'd also argue that "Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't already have" is one of the truest lyrics ever penned in song writing history.
"Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you."

To that I respond w/ this:

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

Oh...and this as well. Bread could ROCK when they wanted to!

I think Bread has more overall good songs than America but the 3 biggies from America are really, really good and certainly get more airplay on the radio than Bread, but i will still go with Bread

Both bands are awesome. America had Sir George Martin working with them after their first album, therefore they learned a lot from a true music mastermind. And while America was a band of three young inexperienced boys, Bread members were studio musicians. Everything that's been said about Bread had more to do with David Gates being the composer of their hits, but the other composer in the band, James Griffin, used to do great music that never became single releases, therefore the Bread "sound" was Gates indeed. If you listen to their albums, you'll notice how great they were. Their 1977 "return" album Lost without Your Love is a true gem. Now don't get me wrong, I love Bread, but America is one of my favorite bands of all time. I met Dewey and Gerry fifteen years ago. They signed my album. Great guys, and they still make great music!

Another reason Bread gets my vote is b/c they guest starred on a 3rd season episode of The Hardy Boys w/ Shaun Cassidy! Here's part of Defection To Paradise:

"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

It's funny ever since the wonder years people think of Bread as chick music but it's really really good music. I think bread is more indicative of the early 70's (70-73) songwriter sound where America is more a 74-77 pre disco sound. Which is why americas songs have a fuller sound and bread is basically a guitar and a piano/organ. I still like bread but most of the hits are really sentimental and sappy.
