    Thanksgiving Memories..

What are your good memories of Thanksgiving's from the past?

Back in the 70's and 80's my family would go to my grandparents house for thanksgiving. My grandma made the best turkey and homemade pumpkin pies. It was a tradition that we had the first 19 years of my life. Most of my immediate family was there. Still to this day I have not tasted anything as good as her cooking. After they moved to Florida in 91 we changed the tradition to have it at my parent's house. It was good but not the same as my grandparents.

My family and my uncle's family use to gather at our grandparents house, until my grandfather passed away when I was 18. After that we split off, and just did immediate family Thanksgiving. Not really sure why, as we did Christmas together. I have really great memories of those times, and my grandparents, mother and last month, my uncle have all passed on. I still am very thankful of the family I have now, but I have fond memories of those years.

As for food, the thing I miss the most is my grandmother and mother's cushaw pie. It's a lot like pumpkin, but has a slightly different texture and taste. It's hard to top! My aunt can make it, and I'd love it if she just gave me one for Christmas!

We used to celebrate Thanksgiving and have turkey but it was never a huge bash like Christmas.

My mom made great turkey and homemade stuffing ---- no stove-top or bag stuffing for her

Started by buying bread ahead of time and letting it go stale

We had a Castro Convertible Coffee table that would change into this huge dining table that could seat 8 people. I loved that thing, and it would only get opened for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. My brothers would get the folding chairs from the basement. Mom would get out the good dishes and good silverware, and my sister and I would set the table. There was always turkey, 2 kinds of stuffing (my dad liked the sausage kind), gravy, mashed potatoes, biscuits, veggies, candied yams, egg nog, apple cider, and at least 3 pies. It was mostly immediate family, but sometimes, my aunt and uncle and a cousin or 2 would come by. I really miss those days, as these days, I'm flying solo and celebrate by myself. But I do celebrate, b/c I have a lot to be thankful for.
