The First "A Christmas Story" movie was actually from 1976

The iconic A Christmas Story was actually the fourth movie about Ralphie and his family.

Phantom of the Open Hearth (1976) was the first.

    Even has the lamp.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Anyhoo...I thought it was a neat bit of trivia.

I didn't know about this version, I knew about the sequel with Charles Grodin but never bothered.

Had one PBS channel in 1976 and had to adjust the UHF rabbit ears to get it. Probably why I missed this back then.

Haters. I had no idea there was a previous movie either. Had "The Movie Channel" on our cable in college, and saw "A Summer Story" with Grodin there. It's not awful, but it lacks the charm of the original...or the 2nd movie anyway!

A Christmas Story was the 4th and A Summer Story was the 6th. I don't think most people realize how many there are.

The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters (1982) with Matt Dillion as Ralphie

Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss (1988) with Jerry O'Connell as Ralphie
                    My Summer Story (1994)

I think some people have become jaded to ACS because TNT runs it for 24 hrs every year, the same thing happened to It's a wonderful life. The Author Jean Smart is brilliant (he is also the narrator and the bearded man in the line for santa who says "the line ends here..."

and if you ever have the chance to read his Book In God we Trust and all others pay cash you wiill laugh out loud

Jean SHEPHERD. But I agree with your comments.
If I had only spent a tenth of the time studying Physics that I spent learning Star Wars and Baseball trivia, I would have won the Nobel Prize.
