    Peter Gabriel Live

Not sure if there's any fans of his here on the site but I just got back from seeing him live tonight and man what a show. He played the So album in its entirety plus a few other hits as well (Shock The Monkey, Digging In The Dirt, Solsbury Hill) Seriously amazing. After the 4 song acoustic intro it became THE Peter Gabriel laser light show. Guy is still in great voice and is quite the musician. I'd say if you get a chance to go see him and your on the fence about going, go! In the past month I've been lucky enough to catch Madonna, Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, and Florence and the Machine. All four show were winners.

I've soured on Gabriel...especially in the last 3 years. After he snubbed the rest of the guys in Genesis at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards a few years back I felt he didn't deserve my respect. The guy was in NY only a few blocks away from the awards ceremony rehearsing with an orchestra for a show that basically was re-hashed Gabriel...but with an orchestra. To be that disrespectful to the group that basically put you on the map as a lyricist and as a "showman" is just wrong. I can't support someone like that. Just my thoughts.

Sounds awesome! I'm glad you had a good time.

He was just here - and I missed him again - and I've been kicking myself since.

I've always wanted to see him, but I never have. It seems every time he tours it's really bad timing for me - and the one time I actually had tickets the show got canceled.

I guess you could look at it like that but to me he left the band in '75 and has never looked back so at least in that regard he's been consistent with that decision. Most casual fans today don't even realize he was the frontman before Phil Collins and while Genesis had some huge hits after he left, they don't have that signature Genesis song with Gabriel that you always here. Sure, The Lamb may be one of the best concept albums ever but there's not a trademark single from that album or any other before it that stood the test of time. Genesis first lasting single didn't even come till 3 years and two studio albums after he left before they achieved any actual mainstream success with Follow You, Follow Me on the And Then There Were Three album (a reference to Steve Hackett's departure, not Gabriel's.) Also as soon as Gabriel left Genesis, he also left all the elaborate costumes he became associated with behind and basically reinvented himself as a performer and artist. From what I understand, they are all on good terms and he did rerecord the Carpet Crawlers with Phil Collins for the Greatest Hits album back in '99 when they reunited every single member in the band for that one song but other than that, that has been the only thing he's done with the band since leaving. Now I'm not dismissing his Genesis years by any stretch and for my money, those albums are just as good (and in some cases better) than anything Pink Floyd was putting out at the time except for Dark Side of the Moon. That Radio City Orchestra concert was really dull by the way. I was really disappointed with it. I mean he didn't even play Sledgehammer that night. It was good to see him return to form last night though and play some actual songs fans wanted to here instead of some odd cover songs without guitars. If you do want to see Gabriels Genesis, check out a band called the Music Box. They usually tour every year with a different Genesis album and replicate the show to perfection and are spot on to the original performances of the 70's.

Conversely, don't forget it was Sting and Peter Gabriel singing back up to Collin's No Jacket Required with "Take Me Home" so I'd second that no annimosity exists. I would think a Peter Gabriel appearence at a Genesis award event would diminish what Collins and the group built after he had left. Besides, we don't know what happens behind the scenes, Peter could have sent the guys a well-wishy congradulatory note with flowers or confections.

                Lloyd Dobler in person!

John Cusack shows up with a ghetto blaster during a live performance right before "In Your Eyes". This put a smile on my face - so I thought I would share.
