Power outage causing my computer a nervous breakdown.

    It's been fun.

About 8:30 the Friday before last the power went down. Only it didn't go down right away. It went off and came back on for a minute and went back off and came back on for a moment again before it crapped out for about three hours.

When the power came on and I checked my computer, my computer could not get into windows. As it turns out the nature of the power outage caused a partial reboot and just screwed up the operating system but good.

My father knows a lot about computers and we worked with it trying different things but windows would not work no matter what we did.

The next option was to get another hard drive and install everything again and get my files off the old hard drive (which I believed and hoped was good). That was a series of misadventures too but we finally got it going.

Only, putting the old hard drive in prevented it from booting up because of the other operating system. The next course of action was to get a USB adapter so the hard drive could be plugged in after reboot.

That came in today and I am just getting finished getting all the repro and custom box files and other stuff off that old drive onto the new. It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. If the old drive was somehow bad and the files could not be gotten, I have an old computer with the lion share of the material but not anything from the last year or so. Needless to say, provisions for backup are underway.

From past bad experiences I've learned two things: 1. I always backup my data, I use a couple external hard drives, and 2. I always have my computer connected to a battery uninterrupted power supply. The power in my town is kind of wonky, it often goes off and back on again quickly for no apparent reason. Computers do not like that, but now I don't have to worry.

How about a battery back up surge protector? This will never happen again.

It's a good idea but it wasn't a surge persay it was a reboot getting interupted more than once due to the way the power went out. But I am looking into it.

              Hmmmm....

I had a similar problem last year. Beiung a Luddite, I don' trust technology, so all my data is stored externally as well. I mentioned it on another file, but if you keep all your data in one or two folders (preferably on your desktop and not the official "my files" folder) and your system tanks, you can SOMETIMES reinstall your OS (DON'T reformat) and then find those files with a search. The reinstalled OS generally goes on the same sectors, and not reformatting doesn't erase your folders. The computer forgets they're tere but sometimes a search finds them. Drag 'em to your desktop, save them and THEN do a full reformat.

              ....or replace the hard rive.

              Don C.

Mike, folks like you and I have really important files - gotta maintain backups.
I basically have three drives that I jocky stuff too so they're all clones of themselves.
Cloud storage is really becoming popular and easy; I've just not opted to spend the money since I have a good scheme going anyway.
If Windows takes a poop, no big deal; I just reload Windows 7 and up and going again in less than an hour.

A small UPS might interest you as mentioned above.

Super glad you didn't lose any data :-)
