I have 4 weeks now so I would definitely do 1 week. If I had less, I would keep my vacation time.

It all depends on how much you like the company you are working for. If it's become a slog working for them...take your vacation. If you like what you are doing and the people you work for then there would be no harm in taking the cash instead of the vacation. I can tell you that I am off this week on vacation cause I can't take working for the place I work for these days. Owner cries poverty yet they come to work in a brand new Caddy and have a "thing" set up down in Costa Rica just in case the company goes under. No raise in just about 5 years...yeah, there's no way in hell that I wouldn't take the vacation over the cash and no vacation. But that's just me."When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

My work shift is 5 days on then 5 days off.
I'm on holidays every other week...LOL.
I get four weeks off a year and am also allowed to bank overtime up to eighty 80 hours.
I take the banked time off instead of cash.
I would rather spend time with my wife and kids then give it to any company.
I love my job and money but I love my family more and in te end you need to take a break to stay sharp, focused and reliable.
Otherwise you just get burned out and miserable at home. You begin to hate your job and the people your with.

The really cynical side of me adds; "Take the cash, smile big and then call in sick for the next week. Claim back pain, go to an in and out medical clinic get a doctors note, go on vacation, get back, file proper forms at work to ensure you get your 'sick pay' and BA-BAM! You played the system."

The very reason I work is to not work.
I hate you Europeans with all your damn vacation days. I started a new job this year, I get five days. I'm going on vacation for ten (including a weekend) the rest I'll just have to take as unpaid leave.Comment

Keep the vacation.
I once had a couple of months worth of vacation piled up (I had been with a company for a really long time and was accumulating it faster than I could find time to use it). The company ran into some major financial issues and started forcing us to either take vacation days or days without pay if we didn't have it. Then they capped how much vacation you could earn. They ended up filing for bankruptcy and I was lucky enough to get out of there while they were still going through the bankruptcy process and cash in all of the vacation pay I accumulated over the years. Came in handy a few years later when I was laid off from a job."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."
