I see about a half dozen out there online but after it runs it's program, it wants you to buy the product to get the license. It's frustrating. I've been trying to recover info on my hard drive after my windows program crashed this spring. I've even bought a special USB plug to plug the hard drive into another computer and search that way. But I'm not finding it under my documents. But when I use recovery software it does find it! I just can't access it without having to buy this freaking program too. *Sigh* I've already spent enough money on the plug and that should have worked. I'm just wondering if anyone knows a different way for me to get those files either through the plug-in set up I currently have or by using a truly free software recovery program. Any help would be appreciated.

There's a cheat that sometimes works, depending on how your system died. I keep all my data in one or two folders, labelled something like "projects." If you've done something similar, or remember the names of the folders your stuff was in; reinstall Windows. Don't reformat or anything; just reinstall the OS. It'll put it in the same place as your original one, but completely overwrite the original. When it's done, do a search for those folders; often they're still on your drive. The new Windows doesn't know that.... until you search 'cos all your routes and busses and whatnot get overwritten. If you find the folders, yank 'em to your desktop, resave on some external medium, and if you intend to reunse the hard drive do a full reformat, reinstal, etc.
