Wrestling Thread (which wrestlers have you met ? ?

    Being a semi prowrestling fan,
I've met some wresters in my day.
Some were very cool, some were mediocre and some were just not nice.

    My cool list ........
    Bam-Bam
    Tito Santana
    Wild Samoans
    King Kong Bundy
    Axe
    Brutus

    Medocre ......
    Captain Lou
    Jimmy Snuka
    Kurt Hennig
    Doink

    Not Nice ......
    Brett Hart

    What about you ?

    Years ago (late '79-early '81):
    George "The Animal" Steele
    Tony Garea
    Curt Henning
    Rick Martel

Garea and Martel were tag partners at the team, Steele was a monster heel, and Henning was a young upcoming star. Interestingly enough Steele and Garea were playing cards in the back behind the curtain and then they wrestled later in the evening.

    Around '92:
    Ted DiBiase
    The Genius Lanny Poffo
George Steele (again, this time he was a face)

    '94:
Ric Flair (saw him at Disney World when my wife and I were on our honeymoon)

Everyone was gracious, but I wasn't in their face either. Said my piece, got an autograph and a handshake and moved on...

My Nephew, who's a big wrestling fan has met Flair many times... along with Arn.
He always said they were super-cool.

BTW, forgot a person on my not cool list above,,,,,,,,

      Bruno Samartino.
He was like the snottiest wrestler I ever met, short of Brett.
Would not even look you in the eye.

I've met Dewey Robertson (aka The Missing Link, from World Class Championship Wrestling) and he was great. So was Harley Race and Eddie Gilbert.

Ric Flair was rude to me. Granted, I was a little kid bugging him for an autograph, but still.

              That's strange .....
My nephew is a total wrestling fanatic and has met Flair at least 100 times and he always said Flair was super-cool ......

              Hmmm,
Now that I think about it... Flair was probably afraid of him-- as a stalker

Met a lot of small timers who wrestled in the old Southeast Wrestling circut. Met Flair, Randy Macho Man Savage, Paul Jones and Wahoo McDaniel. All were very nice and polite.

Never met any wrestlers in person. I flew into Atlanta and the million dollar man was sitting in the row behind me. I wanted to say hi, but I figured he wanted his privacy.

I would love to meet Diamond Dallas Page and Kevin Nash

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

There's a local guy that runs old school small shows every few months in a gym near where I work, and for a while my brother, stepdad and I would go watch the wrestling. They'd usually get one "big name" guy to draw a crowd, and I've met a few guys there.

I met and had my picture taken with George the Animal Steele, who was old school tough. He patted me on the back after I got the picture with him and he just about knocked me over. King Kong Bundy was really cool, too. One of my favorite wrestling memories was watching the old WWF Monday night show with Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan on commentary. Bundy was wrestling some much smaller guy (one of the Killer Bees, maybe?), and the whole time Heenan was building Bundy up and calling him the world's greatest athlete. The Killer Bee got knocked down on his back, and immediately did a nip up (that move where you kick your legs up and somehow flip up and land on your feet... only the most agile wrestlers can do it). Heenan then claimed that Bundy was such an amazing athlete that he could do that, which to me is totally hilarious... a 450 pound "fat guy" wrestler doing a nip up.

One other guy that I saw at a local show was Dan Severn, who was pretty intimidating.

I was down in White Marsh, MD doing some shopping once and there was one of those mall sportscard shows set up there, and there was this 8' folding table where Virgil (of "Million Dollar Man and" fame) sat, all alone, in front of a giant vinyl banner with his name on it. I kind of felt sorry for the guy.

                      Hmmmm....

A friend of mine had a friend who was in the WWF: he was one of them no-name guys that got slapped around by someone in a better costume. Can't remember his name.

I got to meet Wahoo McDaniel, Ivan Putzky, and Dorey Funk at Houston Wrestling in the old Sam Houston Collosium in the 70s. My friends dad was a cop and took us along while he worked security. Houston Wrestling was every Friday night and was promoted by Paul Bosch an Old-time wrestler. The place was the epitome of the old joke -- "what has 7 teeth and the IQ of 28 --- the first 2 rows at a wrestling match."
Don't be sorry. How would you know? You've been watching MTV all your life.
