When I was 5 years old, this guy was a true life superhero to me.
He always seemed to carry himself with so much dignity and class. RIP. -

Wow...another icon gone. But he was special...he walked on the moon. How many of us mere mortals will ever do that? RIP Neal."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

I could only imagine the pressure that went along with the distinction of being the 1st man on the moon. An event like that would come to dominate every portion of your life if you let it. I don't think you could ever have a conversation with anyone you met without having to discuss it, if only briefly. Buzz Aldrin could afford to be more available about it, he was 2nd but still only one of a larger (albeit very select) group. Neil was the FIRST. and he lived up to his role. In an era where our celebrities & role models crash & burn repeatedly, it's a tribute to the type of hero he was.
I will always remember where & when I watched that moon landing, and everytime I see it, I am again that 8 year old kid lying on my grandfather's carpet watching the big black & white tv screen. I can only hope that my daughter will have such a moment to treasure, an event of national pride & not tragedy.
I've often wondered why we as a nation don't acknowledge the moon landing as a national event, a testament to our bravery, creativity & ingenuity. Why isn't there a holiday for moon landing day? I bet if there was, we would treat & understand our space program for the scientific advances it has given society, instead of the wrongheaded thinking about "wasting money on space when we need it here".
RIP Neil.Comment

I remember it like Yesterday watching it with my parents then seeing it in the paper....made me dream of maybe one day being one myself alas that never happened but I still love our space program and still dream about the stars
Thank you Neil for being a TRUE American Hero!Comment

I'm a big admirer of Neil Armstrong...the dude had balls of steel...the stuff he did as a test pilot was unbelievable...some scary arse stuff right there...and going to the moon was extremely dangerous as well...we take all that stuff for granted...but he was a baddazz who never sought publicity, it just fell on his lap...but kept his dignity, and never cheapened himself to the public.
RIP great one...now you are one who truly deserves to be called a hero...

That's because Armstrong cherished his privacy...some people just don't seek fame...he just did his job...he refused to be a court jester...Armstrong was an astronaut who never wanted to be a celebrity, and I for one applaud him for that.sigpicComment
