Last night I watched two episodes of a new show on Syfy called Collector Intervention. Basically, it's Hoarders, only without the banana peels and dead cats. The comely show hostess, Elyse, who actually knows about collecting and toys (how often can you work "comely" and "knows about toys" in the same sentence?) guides collectors along the path of redemption, or at least suggests ways to make life more manageable for the collecting impared. This is the link to the show -
Anyway, the show focuses more on the truly obsessive and the monetary side, but there's also some heart and much truth that hits frightenly close to home. I sometimes think I'm one more Rubbermaid bin away from being on one of these things myself.
They've already touched on Megos, with one guy that focused on all things Catwoman, but had some real nice Mego 12 inch boxed Hulk and Nubia figures he was being pushed to part with.
It also made me think about my own collections of Mego, GI Joe, Star Trek, etc. I've got stuff in boxes and bins I haven't looked at in years. So why have them? Granted, they don't eat much, and I have plenty of room, but the boxes taunt me everytime I go into the basement.
Also shown are some really nice boxed items that aren't well cared for because the collections are such a mess. I do that, I'm sure. Great stuff forgotten at the bottom of a box.
Of course the show makes it seem like you easily unload the worthless stuff, like Playmates Trek or non vintage GI Joe, or be glad to get pennies on the dollar, but still,it has me reconsidering some of the bulk. Maybe there should be a show for lazy collectors who just can't be bothered to sell or give away stuff or don't want to admit they ****ed away a lot of money on things they barely ever looked at?
Anyway, good show, I highly recommend taking a look, if for no other reason than to see parts of yourself on the screen. Oh and parts of your collection, too. Sort of like "40 Year Old Virgin."
