What was your MUSIC CLASS back in the day ?

Back in gradeschool, what did your music class consist of ?

Mine was having a man music teacher with and old upright piano.

He would roll it into our class once a week, pass out mimeographed papers with the lyrics to songs like ...

    Feelings

    It's Impossible

    The Impossible Dream ....

....... and some current hits including

    How Deep is your Love

    You Light up my Life

    etc.

He would usually yell at us for singing wrong funny lyrics

This is what we did for 45 minutes each week

    how about yous ?

Well, our music teacher was Mrs. Gibson. And our music class was sorta like the beginning of our weekly assembly b/c we sang songs from our music sheets like "Lift Every Voice and Sing", "Don Gato", "Matilda", "Mairzy Doats" and my personal fave, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", and others. For music class, we just went to the auditorium, since that's where the piano was, and learn different songs, and learned to say the scales forwards and backwards. Personally, I loved Christmas time, b/c back then it wasn't a crime to sing about Jesus' birthday and Santa Claus.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

It was that until grade 6 as I remember. Then we got real instruments. I played snare drum. I sucked. My teacher was pure evil (Still hate you Miss Pilgram) who gave me anxiety as she would get so worked up about my "flams". I never did learn how to play an instrument.

I have a complete mental block on it, but my vague memory was having a female teacher with an upright and generally singing "Home on the Range" or "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".

Our elementary class went a few times a week. Our teacher had a piano and we learned children songs (dont remember what) and played around "trying" to learn a little about basic instruments like the flute, drums, etc. The most vivid memory I have is playing musical chairs and trying to learn dance moves. One year we put on a play that had musical numbers during Christmas time.

In the early grades, we had a weekly choir class where we had to learn a bunch of kids' songs.

Then in grade 7 we finally got a full music class that had a wide array of orchestral instruments for the class to play including trumpets, saxophones, clarinets, flutes, trombones, baritones, french horns and even a drum kit.

I know it's not a popular subject for some, but music class for me meant learning how to play the flute***

                  I wish I could remember.

I do know that I played the clarinet in my grade school music class. Took lessons on that, the piano, and the guitar. Ended up as a drummer. Go figure.
