    RIP Sally Ride

First woman in space Sally Ride died today of pancreatic cancer.

Of course the news will pass on this story because of 24 hour coverage of Batman killings and Penn State sex scandle

    RIP Sally

Sally Ride was a true American hero, one of that type we don't see too often who personifies a positive role model for kids. sad to hear of her passing. RIP.
And Mikey was right, ABC News ran it as the last article of the day.

Ugh - this is the first I heard of it. It's sad when heroes are worth less press than trash.

Too bad. I still remember the "Ride, Sally Ride!" headlines when she went into space.

If it weren't for this thread I wouldn't have even heard about this. Sad.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

This isn't meant to take anything away from Ride or Ride's achievements, but she was actually the third woman in space - she's the first American woman in space. Interestingly the Soviets had sent the first woman (and first civilian) into space way back in 1963. They also sent another woman into space in 1982. Ride's mission was in 1984.

So sad that her passing was buried. Meanwhile, local news stations are camped out at every screening of DKR for crowd reactions. Pathetic.
