I was managing a convenience store (years ago) and had borrowed an employee from another store to cover a short 4 hour shift. While I was doing paperwork, her husband came in (I guess they had just gotten seperated) and started being loud. She was about 25 and he must have been 45. Anyway, I came out and asked if I could help out with anything. He started to raise his voice to me. I wasn't having it and basically escorted him to his car. I asked her what that was all about and found out he was a pretty violent guy, etc. I was young and dumb and wasn't terribly concerned. I actually ended up giving her a ride home and well.....we dated for a couple of months. (Score one for the young and dumb).

In this day and age, it's risky to do what you did what D. Not sure what I would have done, but I am older, wiser and would have been cautious as hell. We live in a world where you can't even see a Batman movie without looking over your shoulder.

I definitely will confront if necessary, but try to call the police if I can help it. Last fall, I was driving my son to school and saw a suspicious looking white van sitting right along the path where kids walk but a little way back from the school. It might have been purely innocent, but the person appeared to be watching the kids and not doing what you might typically see such as making a cell phone call, filling out paperwork, etc. (also an out of state license plate). I pulled over so I was a bit away from him but could see everything he was doing. I called 911 and told them I wasn't leaving until the police arrived and would prefer they stay on the line with me and I would let them know if something happened before the police arrived. I think 3 police officers arrived within 30 seconds of my call. Sure, I was running late for work just like everyone else, but would have felt horrible if I simply went about my business only to find out something had happened. Just a couple of months ago; it looked like a fender bender had occurred on the highway and two males were out less than an inch from each other's face pointing and posturing themselves for a physical fight. Again, I could have just gone about my way, but pulled over and called the police. It just isn't in my nature to see things like this happen and do nothing.

When I was 19; I worked at a beer and wine store (kind of funny that I was allowed to work there but not old enough to buy it). The manager had a crazy ex-boyfriend who usually would call the store and harass her, sometimes show up, and start arguing with her, etc. I remember after those incidents; she would beg me not to say anything to the store managers because she didn't want to get into trouble. One night, we were closing shop and as soon as we locked up he came out of nowhere and had her pushed up against a wall with his hand around her throat. I probably weighed 150 lbs soaking wet, this guy was huge (tall and muscular). I initially started to get involved, he turned to me and told me to mind my own business or he was going to beat the $%^& out of me. I hollered for someone to call the police and although I didn't jump into a physical fight; insisted he let go of her, I wasn't leaving, and the police would be arriving any minute. In retrospect, I'm glad I got involved at least to that extent. Nobody was hurt, he was arrested, and ironically, the girl is now married to a good friend of mine.
    Great story man

It's a heroic thing you tried to do, Damien...but next time...you should consider not getting involved...your family and loved ones come first...you never know what kinda crazy couple you might run into...hell...not only could he be packing...but even the female getting smacked could be packing (and then she'd turn on you)...it's a crazy world out there.

But kudos to you, Damien, and going straight to the cops was absolutely the right thing to do...even if they didn't care or react...you did the right thing there.
    very true, thanx bro

Those must be the sketchiest calls for you. I remember some crazy stories from my cop friends back in Baltimore. Unpredictability personified.
And of course if anything happens afterwards it's your damn fault in their eyes. That's a job I could do for one day, tops.

I yell at the guy and when he see's me he takes off..I call the Cops and say hey that guy just beat the crap out of this chick in the van and he took off! they say who? I say the guy over there with the red shirt.. She get's in turns on the car and tries to leave, they stop her and ask her in front of me and she swears It's not true.. I'm like w t f?? I'm like I know you're scared but you asked for help and I'm trying to help you, she still says NO! The cop looks at me and says well I guess there's nothing to do here? an old lady pops out and says she did ask for help I saw him hit her! The cop says sorry I can't do anything... I walk up to the chick and I tell her, you see? Next time he beats you, don't bother asking for help...Or even worse, there might not be anyone there to hear you

The cops like, I know you meant well man...I was like that's the last time I ever try this crap! (which is not true I'll always try and help if they ask for it) but dang man, it was frustrating, she was calling me a liar to my face oh well

Years ago I had a neighbor who beat his girlfriend. One night I hear here screaming bloody murder so I call the cops. Before they got there I honestly thought he was gonna kill her so I kicked in their door. Cops showed up, she wouldn't let them in! Here she is with two black eyes and a fat lip, crying, and telling the cops they just argued!
They were ready to haul me away though, for kicking the door in.
Eventually they let me off the hook cause they knew she was lying to protect the scumbag, but damn! I said never again.
