Here's their garbage reply on the statue:

It seems some people at Penn State will never get it. And that's sad.

See, I totally disagree with dissolving the athletics department. Such a move would affect people that had absolutely nothing to do with the monstrous crimes Sandusky committed or the cover-up by the president, vice-president, athletics director and head coach of the university.

When you talk about closing down an athletics department you are talking about doing away with 100s jobs as well as the opportunities for 100s athletes on scholarship. Such a punitive stance is overkill. The ones who did the crimes should be punished and it appears they will be for perjury and likely obstruction of justice. Paterno is dead or he would be facing the same chargers.

It's not justice to punish those who had nothing to do with the situation and no knowledge of it just because the acts of a few were vile and reprehensible. That's elementary-school thinking where you punish an entire class because of the actions of a few bad students.

I don't support shutting things down either. These kids and student athletes have done no wrong. The ones who are guilty will get punished. And like my brother in law said the other day. He still loves the school and will always support higher education. Don't punish the innocent for the crimes of a few.

I laughed when I read that article about the Penn State Board choosing to keep the statue standing (for now) because it represents "the good" Paterno did for the school. Please. Have we not been lied to enough already? There is one reason and ONLY one reason why that atrocity still stands... MONEY. The people who write checks to this institution are calling the shots. This school is preparing to go into a huge legal fight for their very existence against the victims of this horrible crime and they KNOW they are going to need to keep those supporters in their back pocket. Now, just as before, it's not about principle. It's about money. Up until I read this article I felt as MadMarva has stated so intelligently. But after reading this, I now see the board is utterly blind to the higher principle in play here. For this school, it's not about the reality that the athletic department was used as a front to house a pedophile that hurt scores of kids. They seem to have forgotten that this college is SUPPOSE to be a learning institution FIRST. And that something as heinous as this occurring in it's sporting division is not something you fall on the sword for to retain the donors who choose to see football as more important than the principle of learning. So now, maybe the Feds and the NCAA need to consider mothballing the football program. Because if Penn State, as an institution, can not CLEARLY SEE the common sense decision to remove a statue (and not the sports program) out of simple dignity for the victims, how can anyone trust them to oversee the football program in the future? We're talking about a statue here, nothing else. And the school still believes the feelings of the Paterno family and it's supporters should come before anything else? Are you kidding me? Once again, the school is letting someone other than the leaders of the institution make a decision which should be easy to see. We're watching the very politics that allowed a pedophile to remain on campus play a similar role in removing a statue that the community and the world have denounced. I find this Penn State board completely incompetent. Unbelievable...

I have not read that yet. It's amazing that any of these topics are in question. Should be a no brainer.

Exactly. We're talking about a statue here. We're talking about an object that stands outside and gets crapped on by birds 24/7. Is the institution saying that people who choose to honor Joe Paterno can ONLY honor him by kneeling at this object? Is the institution saying it can only have a football program as long as people pass in front of Joe's image? If this board was even remotely intelligent. Remotely competent. And even remotely geared to "higher thinking" they WOULD remove the statue so the community CAN move forward and look to the sports program as it should be seen TODAY. But no... They would rather shove it down the throats of the victims and the community that is outraged over this crime and say, "Well you caught us, but we're keeping the statue anyway." How presumptuous. How arrogant. And how detached from principle. To me, that shows the school is not looking out for the football program right now. They want to close their eyes and pretend the "rich tradition" continues. Well it doesn't. This coach did not retire. He was fired. And a federal investigation revealed that he not only lied to a Grand Jury about understanding the full nature of these events, but helped cover them up for 14 years. What will kids generations from now say when they learn this statue is of a man that protected a pedophile? They'll ask the obvious question that this board of directors can not see for themselves..."Why is there a statue honoring him?" Exactly... And if supporters say that shouldn't erase his football career, well my answer to that is quite simple - It's in the books. Read about it (along with his crimes). Isn't that a part of higher learning?

I think the whole thing is disgusting. From Joe Paterno on down to the least important staff member that not only knew about this garbage but allowed it to continue, just for the sake of money.

May they all rot in the deepest, darkest, nastiest part of Hell for ten thousand years.

It's gotten worse. Now they're saying there are three guys who have come forward and said Sandusky molested them back in the 70s or 80s.

While it is speculation to say that things such as this has happened at numerous other schools I believe it is safe to say that shocking abuses of authority are carried out at all of them.
Unless you're asking the FBI or Justice Dept to come in and shut down the university I don't see how that would or should happen, Jim. This scandal is not an NCAA matter..they never investigated for NCAA rules violations so they really have no jurisdiction nor do they have precedence. As disheartening as it is that this whole thing happened, the perpetrator of the crime will most likely die in jail due to old age or other circumstances. Those that were complicit are either dead or will be going to court to face criminal charges. So the criminals are getting what is coming to them.

The women's volleyball team...men's soccer team...the Freshman baseball team...none of them had anything to do with this and to punish their programs would be an injustice. Penn State will lose so much money on civil lawsuits and reduced donations they might just shut down on their own.

Tom you bring up a great point and one that i think has gotten lost in all this. This idiot was fired as head coach. And only fired when they had no other choice. And for the morons who keep saying stuff like"look at all the good stuff he did" i say the stuff he didn't do will always out weigh whatever he did. He didn't protect the innocent children. He instead protected the Monster that was Sandusky. And i also think more and more will come forward as they become empowered by the others that already have. It wouldn't shook me if this beast has done this stuff his entire life. He just might have goten morebold later in life cause he got away with it for so long.

The NCAA is trying to figure out what kind of penalties it should impose.

I know Tom and Terry and others have had some prolific and very well thought out points about this issue, way more detail than I can muster on this subject, so I'll keep my musings simple.

Penn State probably makes three times as much money from the football program than from tuition.

The football program is ground zero in a child rape case.

Senior members of the university, some with the athletic department knew about this and did not act.

Penn State should not be allowed to profit from tickets that are tainted with the blood found in a twelve year old's underwear.

The program needs to be shut down for a few years, allow all students to transfer without eligibility penalties and reboot in a few years. The only way I can see going forward this season with the football team is if they donate 100 percent of the ticket sales to the victim's families and to organizations who help those who are abused. Those who think it's unfair to the players are not thinking in the real world. If the CEO of your company Effs up, everyone's jobs are gone regardless of who is ultimately responsible. Everyone suffers. This is a life lesson that nothing is fair. This isn't soccer where everyone gets a trophy and an ice cream cone. In this real world, real children were put through real harm and torture by a real, living breathing monster. There should be REAL consequences for turning a blind eye.
