    Back to school? Already?

Ok, we're barely into the middle of July. It's been officially summer for less than a month, and Walgreen's is already pushing out their summer merchandise to make room for back to school stuff! Really? Man, if I was a kid and saw this, I'd be downright depressed.

Kids need to be in school longer! Seems there is a day off for everything not to mention summer breaks are ridiculous! Much too long!

I wish the kids around here would go back as soon as possible ...

They don't even know how to play

Just loiter around all day doing nothing

My kids go back August 7th. They were lucky this year, as we didn't have many snow days, so they got out in late May.

When I was a kid, we got out from late May until the week before Labor Day. I never could figure out why we went back a week, just to get out another day.

Kids need longer summer vacations. Childhood is too short to spend warm months stuck in a classroom.

Today, more often than not both parents work and are out of the house.

They need school as a babysitter

Yup! agree! My schedule is light during the Summer and I'm off in August it's my time to be with my kids.....I continue to teach them so they don't lose a step when September comes but I also take them out more so they can have memories when they get older.....school is not a babysitter for me and i don't want them to be one either....I raise my kids not someone else....

Its only five weeks away here, so its not like the Christmas section is already up. Oh, I saw that, too at Hobby Lobby.

I'm a school teacher and we start back August 10th. Teachers have to go back August 1st. Summer doesn't stretch on forever like it did when I was a kid. When I was a kid we didn't start back until after Labor Day. Now we have to be in school 185 days not counting inservice and training. Dont get me started about when they start putting Christmas stuff out!!

I'm glad I'm not in advertising anymore. We were usually producing creative this time of year for next Jan thru June. I never knew what season it was.

I wished kids' Summer vactions were twice as long...as I live in the same street adjacent to an elementary school, and during school days, the teachers hog up all our street parking spaces... but since it's Summer...there's tons of available street parking right now, lol.

There's also a private Catholic school down the block...but staff has private parking on that one, thank God, lol.

My street is pretty quiet though, even during school days.

I do have a two car carport, but it's the principle, dammit, lol.

Yeah, when I used to see the back to school stuff appearing in the stores, I'd get depressed!

But we used to get up to 9 weeks summer vacation in Ontario. Loved it.
It's significantly shorter in UK... 6 weeks or less.

In Michigan, the requirement these past few years was 165 days. Beginning with this school year, it is going up to 170 and the year after, I believe, back to the 180 days it was when I was a kid. Michigan law does not allow schools to start prior to Labor Day,...tourism dollars and all, you know. There is, however, a loophole that many private and charter schools use whence they can start in August. By having a two week break mid-winter and staying in school until mid-June, they can, on a technicality, call themselves year-round, thus the Labor Day law does not apply.

My biggest gripe is the stupid snow days. I hate to sound cliche, but back in my day, we rarely had snow days. Our bus once hit and got stuck in a snow drift so high that the driver could not open the front door, and we all had to use the rear emergency exit. Then we backtracked a mile in the bus tracks to the previous cross street. In our current sue-happy world, schools close for eight measly inches of snow because of the "what ifs".
