We already have all four of our flatscreens mounted high on the wall with swivel and tilt wall brackets...so this new Ikea concept will not be utilized in our household.

However, I do see a market for these Ikea TV furnishings for a segment of the population.

The whole notion that tv quality has essentially peaked is interesting to me. And the while integrated design with all the cords built in...this would make my wife very happy for a good price.

It's interesting they are using TCL. My friend's big tube TV went out a few months ago and I was kind of shocked when I found out you could get a 40" TCL LCD for around $300 on Amazon. TCL is by no means a marquee brand of TV, but it's not bad, and certainly an improvement over the old tube set he had.

P.S. I liked the spokesperson, too.

            The ad was great.

It always irks me when I see expensive large TV sets in homes with piles of cords and consoles vomiting out of them.

I think that's a good and interesting point about TV quality peaking. The way TV manufacturers are clamoring like crazy to create any new add-ons to the technology sure seems like that's correct.

I'm not sure how people are going to take to the idea of Ikea brand electronics. Some people will always be more interested in esthetic design than tech stuff, I guess - but most people I know have extreme brand awareness with TVs - even people who aren't usually too techy.

I don't know. Electronics like TVs and DVD/Blu-Ray players wear out and break. Then you are stuck with a ginormous piece of furniture with with a useless broken Big screen stuck on it or mute TV because your sound system died or you can't watch movies because your Blu-Ray player is busted.

Eh, I'll stick with seperate components. I have three game systems hooked up to my TV and I've never had any trouble hiding the cords behind it.

You decide to investigate... and you never return...

That's a good point, though I guess the 5 year warranty probably would make the sale for a lot of people. In this disposable culture, people don't expect to own a TV for more than 5 years anymore. That's not a good thing, the disposable nature of regular Ikea furniture is disturbing enough.

Werewolf - that's a great point, and I agree - but I'm wondering if their plan is to keep the design of the individual components modular enough for a period of years to make them upgradable.

That's a really horrible but true thought.

I end up hanging onto my Ikea furniture for forever though. Maybe I take better care with it than most people because of the same reason I have Ikea furniture in the first place - I can't afford much else.

The broken components would also be a concern of mine. And honestly, (and it could just be the color) but the thing is ugly as sin to me. And also, you would think it would be 'easy enough' for a company to design a product that would be complete all in one 'box' more so than the lower extension.

As far as TV tech having peaked I think that will depend more on content creation. Until someone gets even sharper with imaging (do you really want that though?) there would be no need / reason for the receiver / player to do anymore than what its source content can do.

Even with the warrenty it's not going to be as simple as swaping out a busted DVD player or shipping it for repair. Since it's all stuck together you'll have to send in the entire huge piece of furniture. That's gonna way harder than just dropping off a Blu-ray player at UPS.

Besides...the Playstation 3 is the best Blu-ray player on the market...Ikea won't have that...I'll pass, lol.

I was thinking the same thing. I bought one of those TV/VCR combos around 20 years ago, and eventually a tape got stuck. With a normal VCR, I could easily take off the top of the case and get the tape out. With a big tube TV attached to the top of it, no way. With a big piece of furniture like this, it would even be worse if something went wrong with the electronics part. Plus, yeah, it's ugly.

Ps3 is a very good BR player and it was at the top a couple years ago. Taking away the game playing advantage, it's not the best BR player anymore. The better stand alones have surpassed it.
But as all in on entertainment center, it's still the best. Just keep it well ventilated and cool.
