    Live Auctions

I went to my first auction yesterday. The thing I wanted ('67 GI Joe and GI Joe Man of Action w/ role play medic bag) was like one of the last things being auctioned. I won, but I over paid simply because I wanted them and waited long enough. I actually spent the most money of anyone there, I think. But still, it was fun and educational.

My dad (even though he bid and won something) HATES auctions and is convinced that they have friends and family in the in attendance driving up the prices or at least making sure it sells for the price they want. I'm sure that does go on, but still.

Anyway, has anyone gotten really cool and cheap stuff at auctions?

Although auctions are few and far between nowadays, I love them when I can find them. My dad used to drag us to auctions every weekend, and us kids quickly learned how they worked and then got an "auction allowance" to spend while we where there.

It can be difficult to stick to the top price I have set for an item. I know I will never outbid an antique dealer. But usually, I have my eyes set on the odd stuff that nobody else wants. Every year, our little church holds a neighborhood car show with awards that we made from old trophies, toy cars and spray paint. I was thrilled last summer to attend an auction and get three banana boxes of old trophies for a whole dollar! In all I spent $30 and got the trophies, a cool leather coat, a set of Jarts, box of old glass baby bottles, a chair and a huge box of softballs.
