I thought he had passed a long time ago. In Brady reunion shows they had already written Sam off.

I remember that they had written that Sam left Alice for another woman in one of the reunions but he later showed up asking for forgiveness, played by another actor.

He played many characters on Andy Griffith, he was cast as the tough guy. On Gomer Pyler he played the role of SGT Hacker.

He was great in the episode where he was terrorizing Barney. Barney was so scared that he would not be seen in public without his uniform on, and all this was over a ticket Barney wrote him for sweeping trash into the street. At least Barney was taking karate lessons in Mt. Pilot.

He was also great as Sam the Butcher. Last time I checked Alice was still alive, even though I have not seen her in anything lately.

He was always Sam the Butcher to me. That's where I first noticed him.

Holy crap! I forgot all about him shilling for Liquid Plumber! Cripes, Allan Melvin was freakin' everwhere it seems. Any one of his characters could be considered a legacy all by themselves...this guy had tons!
